George Winston – Inspiration & Mainstream Arrival

The enigma that is George Winston has bridged the gap between traditional melodies and the evocative, beautiful New Age compositions. He has formed a lasting legacy that spawned many imitators along the way but Winston’s music remains unique. Driven by distinct influences, the legendary pianist has created music that’s simple, deep and enduring.

A diverse background has also played some role in Winston’s music being eclectic. He was born in Michigan but most of his childhood was spent in Montana’s Miles City. From time to time he also lived in Mississippi and Florida, and is now permanently based in Santa Cruz, California.

During his early years in Montana, George Winston was greatly inspired by the extreme weather conditions, especially the winters. His hit album “December” reminisces about that time – the happiness, snow and Christmas.

While growing up, Winston was also exposed to the music of the Rock n Roll Hall of Famers The Doors and he started performing their songs in local clubs. He joined a band and later got a chance to listen to the jazz pianist Fats Waller. It changed his perspective about music and he switched to solo piano. In 1972, George Winston released his debut album “Ballads and Blues” that appealed to people with broad musical preferences and featured exhilarating compositions.

Following the release Winston remained low-keyed and in 1977 decided to quit music altogether. Fans can be grateful to the Atlantic Records as in 1979 the label re-released one of the 500 greatest albums of all time by Professor Longhair “New Orleans Piano”. It once again inspired Winston into music and he later released “Autumn”.

George Winston – Defying Musical Stereotypes

Winston describes his music as “rural folk piano”, but it’s the instrument that he uses – Steinway Grand Piano that makes it unconventional. Steinway Grand Piano can hardly be called a rural folk instrument and even rare is to compose urbane, voluminous melodies on it. But George Winston does just that.

Growing up on rock n roll and evolving his style through blues traditions, jazz as well as pop, George Winston discovered piano folk in the 80s. Rising as a contemporary instrumental superstar, he treated the listeners to ambient music laced with mood and texture. “December”, “Sumer”, “Forest” and “Plains” are his Billboard New Age chart-toppers.

“Linus and Lucy – The Music of Vince Guaraldi”, “Night Divides the Day – The Music of the Doors” and “Love Will Come – The Music of Vince Guaraldi, Volume 2” feature the cover songs of the icons that inspired Winston throughout his career.

“Spring Carousel - A Cancer Research Benefit” is the 13th solo album by the pianist. It hit the shelves in 2017. Topping both the Billboard Jazz and New Age Albums, it was composed while Winston was recuperating from a bone marrow transplant at a medical facility. Featuring a 15-song collection, the album boasts of heartfelt melodies and soaring ballads.

George Winston tickets are available for his upcoming concert series. He will be performing live for audiences of all ages, treating them to his stunning brand of solo piano.
