Benson showed an inclination towards music at a very young age. He was seen singing and playing ukulele at local night clubs at the age of eight. He turned to guitar in his teens. His interest in music diverted to jazz due to the influence of his personal favorite artists such as Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker and Charlie Christian. Thus in 1960s he became part of Jack McDuff’s band. Since the ensemble did not last for long George Benson decided to pursue his career as a solo artist. Consequently launching his first album (The New Boss Guitar) in 1964. The album took no time in getting noticed and proved to be a step in the right direction. Hence paving way for his future successful releases.
After years of working as a guitarist, he thought of showing off his vocal strength in his upcoming albums. But despite the rising success every time he proposed the idea he failed to get a nod by the producers. However it was Tommy LiPuma who accepted Benson’s idea of expanding his repertoire as an artist and that is when one of the biggest hits Breezin’ happened.
Breezin’ was a 1976 release which catapulted George Benson to a superstar. Thus delivering hits like The Masquerade, Give me the Night and the instrumental title track. The album received 3.5 stars from Allmusic while stealing the first spot on the pop, jazz and R&B charts in America while also getting a triple Platinum certification. Speaking of the mega hits, the year 2000 has also brought him another series of hits. In Absolute Benson the singer took a big leap from jazz to pop flaunting a different side of him as a musician. Hence spawning hits like The Ghetto, Come back Baby, Jazzenco, One on One etc while bringing into the picture his musical inspirations such as Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Donny Hathaway and Marc Antoine. The album landed on the 24th position on R&B album charts while securing 125th spot on The Billboard 200 Pop Albums chart. On the Top Contemporary Jazz Albums it settled on number one. Releasing in 2000, Absolute Benson received a Grammy Award nomination the following year.
Songs and Stories is another chart topper the jazz/soul singer is credited for. The 2009’s release generated a string of hits including Don’t let me be Lonely Tonight, Living in High Definition, A Telephone Call Away, Come in from the Cold and Show me the Love. This time around Benson played with the musical arrangement while offering refreshing lyrical content as he collaborated with some of the biggest names in the music industry. Gerald Albright, Marc Broussard, Toninho Horta, Tom Scott, Greg Phillinganes are to mention several. The album also featured Lalah Hathaway as a guest vocalist.
Guitar Man is one of his latest offerings as it hit the shelves in 2011. The album focuses on Benson being a contemporary jazz guitarist. If half of the tracks come off as funky, edgy and upbeat then the rest also showcase a mellow take on music. Thus bringing forth a bunch of hits like Lady in My Life, Paper Moon, Tenderly, Naima, Since I fell for You, Tequila and the cover song I want to Hold Your Hand. To have the privilege of watching one of the most accomplished musicians get hold of George Benson tickets.
