About Gary Owen
Gary Owen is a well-known American comedian and actor. His rise to fame was initially through his stand-up comedy work, especially his stint on Black Entertainment Television's stand-up showcase Comic View.
After that, Owen spent a year performing nothing but stand-up comedy and making a name for himself in comedic circles. He was soon after named the "Funniest Serviceman in America". In his early years, his main base was San Diego, California, where he performed the majority of his stand-up work. One of the key characteristics of his approach to stand-up comedy was that it attracted a large, predominately African American fan base. This led to him winning the "Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego" contest. He also actively tried to appeal to this specific demographic by being very selective about which stand-up roles he took. For instance, he performed at the Shaquille O'Neal's All-Star Comedy Jam Tour. By taking up targeted events, Owen worked hard to build up his African American fan base and typically creates stand-up routines which are designed to appeal to them.
After winning that award, he landed himself a gig at The Comedy Store in Hollywood. His next order of business was auditioning for BET's Comic View in 1997. He went on to make two appearances on that multicultural showcase, both of which were very successful. He was therefore given his own one-hour Grandstand show as a result of his success.
By the end of that comedy season, Gary Owen was selected from the year's four "Grandstanders" to be the host of Comic View. This was a huge milestone for Owen because it marked the first time in history when a white man became the host of Comic View!
Black America’s Favorite White Comedian
Gary Owen continued to perform tirelessly making more and more fans along the way. In 2011, he was named "Black America's Favorite White Comic" by Ebony. He then went on to become one of the headliners on Martin Lawrence Presents: 1st Amendment Stand-Up on Starz.
In addition to his stand-up comedy work, Owen also started producing stand-up DVD’s. This included Breakin' Out The Park and Urban Legend.
He also started venturing into acting. Owen would star in the Screen Gems comedy Think Like a Man which was based on the book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man by Steve Harvey. The movie also starred Kevin Hart and Gabrielle Union.
Other film credits to his name include Held Up, Daddy Day Care, Love Chronicles, Rebound, Little Man, Sweet Meet, Who Made the Potato Salad?, House of Payne, Think Like a Man Too, College, Ride Along, Think Like A Man, The Real, Get Hard, and more,
He also had a recurring role on the TBS Show by Tyler Perry called House of Payne. On the show, he played Zack. Since 2016, he has also had his own TV show on BET called the Gary Owen Show. This is a ten episode reality TV series which will follow the daily life of Owen and focus on how he balances his work with his family life.
