Numan is as fascinating a human being as he is a competent musician. Always considered an outsider, he was expelled from school at thirteen due to disciplinary issues related to untreated Asperger’s Syndrome. Since then, he made music and it was only when his music began appearing on British charts, did the musician find a purpose in life.
Once his musical career properly kicked off, Numan moved to Los Angeles with his wife and children. Once there, he promoted EDM amongst American audiences and gradually gained a successful fan following. The artist is particularly vocal about Asperger’s Syndrome, stating that his wife’s support in social gatherings, and synthesizers and musical equipment during concerts are crucial in maintaining Numan’s comfort zone.
EDM and the Mainstream
Perhaps Numan’ greatest achievement I holding onto and creating EDM since the early 90’s to date: it was the only thing he found himself to be good at. And so good, that after twenty years, Numan is considered one of the founders of electronic music. His various collaborations over the years with other artists has allowed for audiences to experience a mash-up between electronic and pop music.
In the present day, Numan and the music he creates is even more relevant as almost every major artist makes use of electronic equipment in their songs. It has affected not just the performance aspect of modern music, but also its recording. “Live” vocals are not restricted to an artist’s singing into a microphone on-stage; they now also include backing tracks recorded on a loop pedal and treated on synthesizers, along with a live vocal. In simpler terms, Numan has had a defining effect on EDM, in bridging the gap between human contributions to a song, and electronic ones.

Savage: Songs from a Broken World
‘Savage’ is Numan’s 22nd full-length album and follows 2013’s ‘Splinter: Songs from a Broken Mind’. Produced by Ade Fenton and recorded in both Los Angeles and the UL, the record is largely written during the last presidential election. Trump’s victory and climate policies are a direct inspiration for this record, leading to a futuristic album set in a post-apocalyptic world. This is what how Numan himself describes it; “There is no technology left and most of the planet has turned to a desolate desert wasteland. Food is scarce, water even more so, and human kindness and decency are just a dim and distant memory. Western and Eastern cultures have merged, more because of the need to simply survive than any feelings of greater tolerance or understanding. It’s a harsh, savage environment, as are the survivors who still roam across it.”
The songs reflect the things people would do in harsh circumstance. They draw desperate characters, questioning standards of morality and a desire for redemption. The singer has released one track from the album online, titled “My Name is Ruin” which is a symbolic anthem to the destruction that has occurred in this post-apocalyptic world. It shows the dehumanizing of individuals as a result of desperation and war. Mankind is essentially in ruins and identified as such.
This track also features Numan’s eleven year old daughter, Persia, on backing vocals. This album, then, has a personal aspect to it as well, and may perhaps continue for more tracks. Its initial release date is expected to be the 13th of September.
