Gary started playing guitar at the young age of twelve; initially he played small gigs during his teen years. Soon his unique vocals and guitar rhythms were captured under the radar of promoter Clifford Antone, who also owned the "Austin Blues Music Club Antone’s". With the aid of Clifford’s connections Gary was soon learning from the very best in Austin and was playing alongside an array of iconic musicians including Jimmy Vaughn. Jimmy and many others in the music community of Austin helped Clark along his musical journey and ultimately facilitated his rise in the rock and roll scene of Texas. He received much deserved acknowledgment and acclaim from his peers due to his fantastic live performances and in 2001 the Mayor of Austin even went out and declared May 3rd as "Gary Clark Jr. Day". At this time Gary was just seventeen years old.
Slowly progressing in his career, Clark’s big break came in 2010 when he performed at the Crossroads Guitar Festival alongside John Mayer, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, B.B King, Sheryl Crow and many other notable musicians. The innovative performer also toured with artists like Doyl Bramhall II, Jimmy Vaughn and Pinetop Perkins and afterwards released his two self produced albums titled "110" and "Worry No More". More recently in 2011 the young artist played at the Bonnaro Music Festival which is held annually, therefore Clark played the next year also at the same event and his live performances were streamed online via YouTube and the Bonnaroo Music Fests official channel. The musician signed with the influential and famed Warner Bros group in 2010, this recording deal resulted when the company saw the DVD release of Clark’s performance in Crossroads Guitar Festival. Soon after this deal Clark released an EP named "Bright Lights" which was widely acclaimed and considered to be among the top 50 albums of 2011 by the Rolling Stones magazine. However, his first major studio album "Blak and Blu" has just been released and is making major noise.
In his latest album singles like ""If You Love Me Like You Say" and "Third Stone from the Sun" force the listeners to make a daring comparison between Clark and the guitar legend Jimmy Hendrix. This latest album is more than just a Blues album; it’s inclusive of some hard rock singles and some contemporary R&B and Blues songs. In addition to receiving various honors and awards from numerous magazines and associations, Clark has also won the Austin Music Award on three different occasions under the Best Electrical Guitarist and Best Blues categories.
