Garrick Ohlsson became interested in music at the age of eight and soon began studying piano at the Westchester Conservatory of Music. The artist didn’t consider a wide range of options for choosing his career path. His quick decision was aided by his inspiration drawn by watching Rubinstein live performance in a concert. ‘I blasted into orbit and that’s when I said in my mind, when other little one say, ‘I want to be a fireman, "that’s what I want to do." Sticking well to his decision, he joined Julliard School for a preparatory course and got the opportunity to study with a well known American pianist Sasha Gorodnitzki. Later, he graduated with a degree in music and studied along with artists like Olga Barabini, Claudio Arrau and Irma Wolpe.
The first time Ohlsson performed before public was when he participated in the Busoni Competition in Italy and came out as a winner. With even a greater level of confidence, he participated in the Chopin Competition after a couple of years and became the first American to win the contest. This launched his career formally as a pianist and instantly attracted the attention of critics. He was now identified as a ‘Bear Butterfly’ of a pianist that distinguished him well from other musicians in the industry. Despite of these accomplishments, the artist did not stop his struggle to explore music further and continued composing amazing melodies.
During the era of seventies, Garrick Ohlsson had the identity of an American musician whose tunes were free of romantic mannerisms and were technically flawless. He earned respect for having a command on an enormous repertoire that included the entire piano literature in its range. This fame tagged along with the artist has travelled across time and he is especially noted for his performances of the works by L.V. Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert in his concerts.
Ohlsson appears and tours as a guest soloist in orchestras worldwide. Since the start of his career to date, he has toured Poland more than a dozen times and is respected especially for Chopin playing. The artist was also a part of the Lincoln Great Center Performer Series in New York City to perform works by Busoni.
Apart from the solo works, Garrick Ohlsson has collaborated with Emerson, Cleveland and Tokyo string quartets for live performances and made special appearances in festivals as well. He along with the cellist Micheal Grebanier and violinist Jorja Fleezanis made a San Francisco based FOG tri and toured with Takacs Quartet that was widely appreciated.
For Ohlsson it is often said that he is the artist who is totally consumed by his music life. Once being interviewed he even forgot what car he drives. Imagine listening to an artist with amazing passion live in a concert. His concert is just few dates away and Garrick Ohlsson tickets are available on discounted rates. Did you get yours?
