For those who wish to know, Gaither Vocal Band is a popular American southern gospel ensemble that came forward in the year 1981. Founded by bassist Bill Gaither, the band currently consists of five members namely Wes Hampton and David Phelps; the two tenors, Mark Lowry the baritone, Gaither on bass and Michael English who is the lead. Initially the band played contemporary Christian music but soon moved into the direction of playing and singing southern gospel tunes that became their signature style for the long run.
Overall the Gaither Vocal Band has released twenty seven albums out of which nineteen have been able to reach the charts. Apart from studio albums, the ensemble has gained massive popularity due to the homecoming videos that they release on an annual basis. They have released a total of 10 homecoming DVDs that include collaborative works as well. Working with the Spring Hill Music Group, the group has been able to bag two Grammys in the categories of Best Southern Gospel for Homecoming and Best Southern for Lovin’ Me. Apart from these prestigious awards, the group has also been honored with nine "Southern Gospel Album of the Year" awards for Homecoming, Southern Classics, Still the Greatest Story Ever Told, God is Good, I Do Believe, Give It Away, Lovin’ Life, Reunited and Greatly Blessed along with seven "Southern Gospel Song of the Year" awards. Some of their most popular award winning songs from their albums include Satisfied, I Bowed On My Knees, I Believe in a Hill Called Mount Calvary, God is Good All the Time, He’s Watching Me, Give it Away and Better Day. If you wish to listen to some of the greatest hits, then you should consider being a part of their next show.
The Gaither Vocal Band was formed after the Bill Gaither Trio, that consisted of members, Bill Gaither, his wife, Gloria Gaither and longtime friend Gary McSpadden, came to an end. Even before the vocal group was established, Gaither and his wife had become popular songwriters in the mainstream gospel scene. One of their compositions "He Touched Me" was sung by none other than Elvis Presley himself, for which he won the Grammy Award for Best Album. It was during a Bill Gaither Trio concert that the trio decided to invite two backup singers to become group members in order to establish the Gaither Vocal Band. These two singers were Lee Young and Steve Green. With the establishment of this group, the five member ensemble released their debut album called "The New Gaither Vocal Band" in the year 1981. This album received widespread fame and popularity and in the following year, Lee Young decided to quit the band and he was replaced by Jon Mohr. Their sophomore album came forward in 1982 in which tenors, Larnelle Harris and Steve Green were taken aboard. This album was named "Passin’ the Faith Along". Their third album brought forward a contemporary sound as compared to the previous two albums released. The album was named "New Point Of View" and it was this album that led to the vocal ensemble determining the kind of musical direction that they wish to take.
The Gaither Vocal Band has seen many members come and go over the years that include Michael English, Lemuel Miller, Jim Murray, Mark Lowry, Terry Franklin, Jonathan Pierce, Guy Penrod, David Phelps, Russ Taff, Marshall Hall and Wes Hampton, amongst numerous others. If you wish to listen the current lineup of the Gaither Vocal Band sing some of this most popular hits, all you need to do is make your way to their next show.
