G Love’s real name is Garrett Dutton. He was introduced to music at a very early age by his parents. When he was only eight years old, his parents took him to a performance by the Blues Brothers. Later that year, Dutton picked up the guitar and started to learn how to play the instrument. He got hooked to hip-hop and blues and began to take keen interest in the music of the people dominating both genres.
During his teenage years, G Love got a chance to meet Waco Smith, a blues performer who used to show his skills on the streets of his native Philadelphia. It was Smith who then exposed Dutton to the music of blues artists like John Hammond, Muddy Waters and Blind Lemon Jefferson. On one hand he was listening to the biggest names in blues and on the other hand he saw his friends listen to hip hop and that combination was to go on and define his career. He started to play blues on his guitar which then led to him performing on the streets of Philadelphia. He moved to Skidmore College in New York after finishing high school but stayed there for only a year before deciding to take up music as a profession. He then re-located to Boston and took up the moniker G Love in the year 1992. He would combine playing on the streets with small open mic gigs at various clubs around the area.
At the beginning of the next year Dutton met" Jeffrey Clemens," a drummer, at a bar named The Tam. That meeting grew into a friendship because of their interest in music so the two started to play together. All they were missing was a good bass player and that search ended with "Jimmy Prescott" joining the ranks. The three of them named themselves "Love and Special Sauce" and went about recording as a group. It didn’t take G Love too long to have his talents noticed and he landed his first music deal in 1994. Love started to perform more frequently than ever before and that honed his music skills even further. G Love and Special Sauce soon made their debut with a self-titled album. The entire album was recorded live and it turned out to be a big hit that had fans and the critics raving. The group then hit the road for an epic tour which brought them even more acclaim.
As a result of all that hard work G Love and Special Sauce landed a spot on the famous H.O.R.D.E tour where they were to join the likes of Rusted Root, Blues Traveler, Dave Matthews and Joan Osbourne on the stage. They followed it up with "Coast to Coast Motel" their second album which was received very favorably by the critics.
Their next release was titled "Yeah, It’s That Easy" which came out in the year 1997. The album was more titled towards their debut and enjoyed quite a lot of acclaim once again. G Love and Special Sauce then embarked on a world tour following which they hit the studios once more in 1999 for their next album titled "Philadelphonic." Their 2001 album "Electric Mile" was more diverse than their previous work. It had blues, soul, funk and hip-hop all bundled together which received a rousing reception.
G Love has also released albums like "The Hustle," "Lemonade" and "Oh Yeah" as a solo performer to rank among the most versatile artist of his era. He has been a revelation who has fused blues and hip-hop to create a majestic new blend of music. He is on an epic tour once again so grab your G Love tickets and see what makes him so special and unique.
