Origins of the musical Dragon

Only 28 years of age, G-Dragon has already become one of the most accomplished music artists in South Korea. Born and raised in Seoul, G-Dragon started his music career as a child star when he joined a band, Little Roo’Ra. It was a brief stint as the band’s contract was abruptly revoked, leaving heartbroken G-Dragon to give up music. However, he was discovered by an entertainment company, S.M. Entertainment, which worked on his dancing skills for five years. However, G-Dragon wasn’t sure at the time what direction to take in life.

The Rapping Dragon

A friend introduced G-Dragon to Wu-Tang Clan and the artist showed immediate interest. He was in the third grade then. By the age of 13, he had become the youngest South Korean rapper.

He signed a record deal with YG Entertainment, which worked on his singing and dancing skills for the next six years. It was only after hard work and perseverance that he became a member of the South Korean boy band Big Bang.

Big Bang Dragon

The band has been called Nation’s Boy Band and Kings of K-pop. With global record sales in excess of 140 million, Big Bang has become one of the best-selling boy bands in the world. The Washington Post has called them the biggest band in Asia.

Big Bang has released seven studio albums, out of which five albums have been certified Gold in Japan. In addition, Big Bang has released twenty six singles, eight EPs, seven compilation albums and nine live albums. Some of their most popular singles are Bae Bae, Loser, Monster, Fantastic Baby and Bad Boy. Few know that it is G-Dragon who is the real reason behind the success of these songs, since it’s he who wrote these songs. As of 2017, G-Dragon has written twenty two number one songs.

G-Dragon, The Heartbreaker

G-Dragon was an instant hit the moment he went solo. Heartbreaker, his solo album, was released in 2009 and became one of the most successful albums of the year. One of the singles from the album, Heartbreaker was a phenomenal hit. The album got the Mnet Asian Music Awards Album of the Year Award.

Other Albums

In 2010, G-Dragon along with another Big Bang member, T.O.P, collaborated to release a studio album, GD & TOP. Three of the singles from the album, namely High High, Knock Out and Oh Yeah became smash hits on the Gaon Chart.

In 2012, G-Dragon released an EP, One of a Kind. The album was nominated and later won at the 22nd Soul Music Awards Record of the Year. That XX, Crayon and One of a Kind were some hit singles from this album.

With the release of Coup D’Etat, G-Dragon’s second studio album, he became an international pop star. The album won the 2014 World Music Awards World’s Best Album Award and he also got the World’s Best Entertainer Award.
