Foreigner are a multi platinum transatlantic band founded by a veteran English artiste Mick Jones , the American vocalist Lou Gramm and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald. This band, which master genres of Rock, Blues and Pop have, to date, sold over 70 million copies worldwide with over 37.5 million copies sold in the United States alone. They have scores of smashing hits and a widespread fan base due to their unique mix of genres. Mick and Lou started the band with Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, Ed Gagliardi and Ian McDonald. Foreigner’s debut album which was self titled, was released in 1977. The overall reception to the album was impressive with over 4 million copies sold in the United States, keeping the album in the Top 20 for over a year. Double Vision, their second coming was released the very next year and was a huge success. It remains the highest grossing album of the band to date, getting a gigantic 7x-Platinum and selling over 5 million copies. Ed Gagliardi was replaced by Englishman Rick Wills in 1979 for their third album Head Games which also went 5x- Platinum. Due to issues of Mick wanting more control of the band, Al Greenwood and co-founder Ian McDonald left the band in 1980. The fourth album titled 4 went No. 1 in the United States and contained their highest grossing song Urgent. For the 1981-82 tour that they do in support of 4, the group added Peter Reilich on keyboards and synthesizers, Mark Rivera on sax, flute, keyboards, synthesizers, guitar and backing vocals, and former Peter Frampton band member Bob Mayo on keyboards, synthesizers, guitar, and backing vocals.
Foreigner’s reign had no limit and it seemed as if they were destined to have success after success. And so success it was, for the fifth time with their next album, Agent Provocateur, expanding their dominance in world music further east, covering almost all of Europe and hitting the radio waves worldwide. The album featured the chart topper gospel-inspired ballad I Want to Know What Love is, which was a No. 1 hit in 1985 in countries like USA, UK, Switzerland, Australia, Norway, and Swede. The year 1987 saw their sixth album Inside Information, and in 1988 the band performed at Atlantic Records' 40th anniversary concert, demonstrating their skills as a vibrant live act.
After a turbulent 90s that saw many members leave and rejoin and Gramm’s surgery to remove brain tumour, affecting his vocals, the band had a transformation in the mid 2000s. Foreigner joined Def Leppard along with Styx on tour in 2007 and had an extensive tour in 2007 - the thirtieth anniversary of the release of their debut. Extended Versions, their first album with BMG contained the new line-up playing the classic hits live in concert. Their music now sounds effortlessly professional, something that can be achieved only by spending decades in this business.
Can’t Slow Down, Foreigner's latest album charted in Top 20 in Germany and Top 30 in Switzerland. In May 2010, they played a show in Las Vegas, NV. The performance was praised by many; however the fans did miss the founder Mick Jones who didn’t join the band for this gig. Now that Mick is back with the boys, they plan to rock the floor this year with a series of unmatched performances worldwide including a tour in UK with fellow bands Styx and Journey, starting 11 June.
With Mick Jones and late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's son, Jason in the team, Foreigner is performing at the level that made them a multi – platinum band. The tour from February to July 2011, is sure to be their best, as they sing their classics and for-one-night specials, inspiring the audience and demonstrating the legacy of Foreigner’s contribution to Pop, Blues and Hard Rock throughout the decades.
