In just a shade over a decade, Foals have made a huge impact on rock music. They have won some prestigious awards and the critics have been astounded by their talent.
Foals came about after a mix and match of several other groups. ‘Foals’ was a name originally adopted by the lead singer of another band called Youthmovies. Bevan, Simon and Philippakis were also part of a band, called The Edmund Fitzgerald. This group disbanded. Gervers and Smith were initially a part of the band, Face Meets Grill but parted ways soon to pursue their own musical careers. Eventually all these members from different musical backgrounds and bands came together to make wonderful music under the initial name coined by Mears, Foals.
With the lineup finalized, the band finally started working on its music. In the start of the year 2007, they released two singles, “Hummer” and “Mathletics”. At this point, as described by the lead singer, the music of Foals was a mix of techno and minimalism. In the summer of the same year, the band initiated work on their first album. The album, called Antidotes was released in March of 2008 in the UK and a month later in the US. The album went on to be a huge commercial success as it debuted at number 3 in the UK and propelled Foals into the limelight. The album enjoyed minor success in other countries.
By the August of next year, the band was already busy recording their next album, Total Life Forever. The promotional single from this album was released in March of 2010 and was called “Spanish Sahara”. The lead single “This Orient” was released in May of 2010 and the album itself was finally released in May 2010. The song “Spanish Sahara” was featured in several places such as the famous TV series, Entourage and Outcasts. The album received commercial success and was even nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize.
Holy Fire and onwards
The next album by the band, titled Holy Fire, came out in early 2013, in both the UK and the US. Famous songs from this album included “Inhaler” and My Number”. Towards the end of the year, Foals began touring for the previews of this album. In the summer of the same year, the band participated in many festivals and headlined the Latitude Festival in Suffolk in July. Foals was also nominated for the Mercury Prize again in 2013. Q awarded the band with the “Best Live Act” Award and the song, “Inhaler” got the Best Track award from NME.
The next album Foals started working on was What Went Down. Work on this album began in 2014, and they shared their album track “Mountain at My Gates” in the summer of the same year. The song “A Knife in the Ocean” was also soon released and was played on Beats 1 radio show on Apple Music.
In 2016, Foals embarked on a tour of the UK and Europe and followed that up by a tour across the US. In addition to regular tours, Foals has been featured on several world-famous music festivals including Glastonbury, Coachella and Roskilde.
The band’s sound has been influenced by several bands such as the Foo Fighters, Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, Talking Heads, Harmonia, For London and so on. Such influences have helped Foals create a very unique sound that is identifiable to them only.
With four albums, one video album, nineteen singles and six EPs, Foals is all set to make some waves on the current tour.
