Florence Leontine Mary Welch is an English musician, and her band made up of other artists that give backing music for her voice is called Florence and the Machine, which is usually written as Florence + The Machine. She diagnosed to have dysmetria, dyslexia and insomnia, but performed satisfactorily in education. She continued her studies at Camberwell College of Arts later, although her passion for music continued to flourish. Death of her grandparents and suicide by her maternal grandmother during her teenage left a deep impact on her personality, and her music and lyrics clearly depict that impact. She also has a fan club named The Florence Friends, and a bigger group called Florence and the Machine Army.

The influence for the name Machine comes from Isabella “Machine” Summers, her friend and co singer in her early years. Generally, the backing band consists of Isabella Summers on keyboards and backing vocals, Chris Hayden on percussion and drums, Robert Ackroyd on backing vocals and guitars, Tom Monger on guitars and harp and Mark Saunders on bass guitars. Florence Welch has also been nominated for 2011’s Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Spin Magazine featured the band on their title for Artist of the Year issue for 2010. The band also performed at 2010 Nobel Peace Prize Concert and 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

The band itself performed at 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and Nobel Peace Prize Concert. They were nominated for their first Grammy Award in the Best New Artist category in 2011. The band won 2010 Meteor Awards in the Best International Band category. They were nominated for four 2010 MOJO Awards. The band was also on the cover of Spin Magazine’s 2010 Artist of the Year issue. Presently, the band is working on its second album.

The band undertook their first major concert tour in 2009 soon after the release of Lungs. Initially it was a UK specific tour but due to the success of the album, the band played in the rest of the Europe as well. Later, encouraged by their continuing success, the band had to play in North America and Japan as well. The Cosmic Love Tour was their second major concert tour in 2010. It was a complete sellout. Florence and the Machine has often participated in music festivals like the Latitude Festival, V Festival, Oxegen (Irish festival), and Isle of Wight Festival 2010, to name a few. The band intends to undertake another US wide concert tour in the summer of 2011, in support of U2 on U2 360 Tour and would be performing on its own as well. Florence + The Machine also performed at the 2011 Oscars.  

The band has signed record deals with big names like Island Records, owned by Universal Music Group, IAMSOUND Records, an independent US based record label company and others.
