Flogging Molly came into being in 1997 and is a rather large band with seven members. George Schwindt (percussion, drums), Bob Schmidt (banjo, mandolin), Nathen Maxwell (vocals, bass guitar), Matt Hensley (concertina, accordion), Dennis Casey (vocals, guitar), Bridget Regan (vocals, uillean pipes, tin whistle, fiddle), and Dave King (spoons, banjo, bodhran, acoustic guitar, lead vocals), form Flogging Molly. The band simply do not just make awesome music, they go a step further; their music is journey into Ireland, its history, politics, religion, etc. Roman Catholicism is obviously one of the many subjects that they have written about. In addition, death, love, drinking, and poverty, too, make it into their lyrics.
While all the musicians of the band are equal in every sense of the word, King stands first among the equals! He could also be classified as their leader! He had had a heavy metal past before forming Flogging Molly. He was part of bands like Katmandu, and Fastway, before going solo. However he soon realized that his record label wouldn’t allow him to use Irish music instruments. Dublin-born King wasn’t happy. So he negotiated his way out of the deal and later ganged up with musicians like Jeff Peters, Ted Hutt and Bridget Regan (she would later join him in Flogging Molly) and started to play their own music; rock mixed with traditional Irish music. The trio started to play regularly at a local Los Angeles club called, Molly Malone’s. This was the beginning of the band.
King admits that the band was named after the club, since it stood by it through thick and thin. "We used to play there every Monday night and we felt like we were flogging it to death, so we called the band Flogging Molly", opined King while giving an interview to Kerrang! magazine. In the early days the band released hit singles like "Devils Dance Floor", and "Black Friday Rule", etc. They have come a long way since those early days and to date has released hit studio albums like Speed of Darkness, Float, Within a Mile of Home, Drunken Lullabies, and Swagger. In addition, their live albums like Live at the Greek Theatre, Whiskey on a Sunday, and Alive Behind the Green Door, have all done exceedingly well, both commercially and critically. Furthermore, Flogging Molly has also released an EP, Complete Control Sessions. With this impressive line-up of music, is it any wonder that Flogging Molly tickets get sold out rather early and quickly!
The band takes its influence from Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer, The Clash, Horslips, The Pogues, and The Dubliners. So impressed are they by Cash and Strummer that they dedicated their third album, Within a Mile of Home to them. The album which had hit numbers like "Don’t Let Me Die Still Wondering", "The Wanderlust", and "Tobacco Island", etc. was huge commercially successful and a critically acclaimed album. While it reached the very top of the Independent Music chart, it was rated at 3.5/5 stars by Allmusic. Released by SideOneDummy Records, it was produced by Ted Hutt.
The band has enthralled its fans in all the four corners of the world ever since their inception! Now that they are touring the nation, they intend to make their next stop your beautiful town! They are all set to enthrall you as well! But are you ready? So show your love for Celtic music by buying Flogging Molly tickets now!
