The band started off as a side project between Reese Roper, Keith Hoerig, Micah Ortega, and Scott Kerr. All of them were a part of the thrash metal band Exhumator, but did not like the music they were playing and decided to shift to something else. They started incorporating new members in the band and slowly adopted the ska music style. The group changed the name to Five Iron Frenzy and started playing at various events.
Ska is a form of music that originated in Jamaica and incorporates elements of Caribbean reggae music, with American jazz and rhythm and blues. The band was inclined towards sending out Christian messages in their songs, believing that music and lyrical content were both extremely important thus they slowly evolved into a Christian ska band.
Initially, the ensemble had planned on staying local, opting to open for other acts and playing at local venues. During this period they also played at local churches and other church sponsored events. They received offers from many record labels, including some Christian ones as well, but decided to sign with Frank Tate's 5 Minute Walk Records. This meant that the band had the chance to record an album, which they did, and released "Upbeats and Beatdowns" in 1996. This album kick started their careers and the band started gaining recognition, mostly for the messages conveyed in their songs.
The band followed up their initial album release with four more studio albums including "Our Newest Album Ever!", "All the Hype That Money Can Buy"," Five Iron Frenzy 2: Electric Boogaloo" and "The End Is Near". The most successful of these was the third album which led to thegroup being recognized in the main stream media. Along with their albums, Five Iron Frenzy also garnered recognition for their tours, most of which were for humanitarian or Christian causes. They had a "Rock Your Socks Off" tour in which they asked people to bring clean socks to the concert to donate to the local homeless shelters. However, their most important tour in this regard was perhaps the Ska Agaisnt Racism tour, which raised awareness and money for anti-racism causes.
While not being blatantly Christian in their songs, their content still conveys Christian messages subtly. They are famous for their optimistic but serious lyrics and slapstick satirical humor. The most common themes found in their songs include social problems such as hypocrisy, racism and they frequently comment on the notion of renewal of faith as well.
The ska playing style that the band incorporates is perfectly suited for Christian messages due to the upfront lyrical style it employs. An evolution of Jamaican music, it has the similar catchy melodies and funky bass lines. The combination makes their songs a wonderful blend of good music and meaningful lyrics, something that is not very common nowadays.
The band decided to call it quits in 2003, however decided to reunite in 2011. The first single they released on their comeback, "Dark and Stormy Night", was free to download, since they wanted to show that they were serious about making music. It was an immediate hit with their fans and was downloaded almost thirty thousand times in just two weeks. The band’s popularity has grown with time.
Five Iron Frenzy is on a mission to make wonderful music and back once again with number of concerts in the pipeline. Their new album is scheduled to be released in the near future. If you have never heard a ska band play, then now you can. Go out and give it a try, and book your Five Iron Frenzy tickets as soon as possible.
