Finding love for folk music
Söderberg sisters, Johanna and Klara were born in Enskede which is located in the outskirts of Stockholm. From childhood, they were interested in singing and began to write songs. Inspired by CocoRosie and Devendra Banhart, they soon started to compose their own country-folk songs. In 2007, they set up their MySpace account where they began to share their tracks under the moniker, First Aid Box.
The duo soon submitted one of the songs, Tangerine to Swedish radio. The track received massive airplay and was even listed as one of the best songs of the summer 2007. As Tangerine was getting more popular, requests for live performances began to pour in and so, the duo played its very first show at PUNKTmedis library in Stockholm.
They later went on to perform more gigs and in April of 2008, the girls churned out their debut extended play, ‘Drunken Trees.’ Issued by Rabid Records, the EP contained seven songs on the track-list and received three and a half stars out of five from AllMusic. A few months later, First Aid Box uploaded their rendition of Fleet Foxes’ track Tiger Mountain Peasant Song on YouTube which has crossed five million views.
The Big Black and the Blue
In 2010, First Aid Box put out their first full-length studio effort, ‘The Big Black and the Blue.’ The record became a hit in Northern Europe but did not bring them much success in other parts of the world. Following the release of this album, the duo set out on tour and performed around one hundred shows in countries like, the United States, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. They were also seen performing at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona.
The Lion’s Roar
After ‘The Big Black and the Blue’ was released to positive reviews from the critics, the sisters hit the studio to work on their second album. Titled, ‘The Lion’s Roar,’ the record came out on January 18, 2012 and charted everywhere in the world. This studio effort also recorded platinum level sales in Sweden whereas in the United Kingdom, it was certified gold. The album featured a collection of hit songs including, Emmylou which was mentioned in Rolling Stone’s list of the, ‘Single of the Year.’ ‘The Lion’s Roar’ became so successful that it won not one but three Grammis Awards in the category of the ‘Album of the Year,’ the ‘Best Pop of the Year’ and the ‘Best Album Composers of the Year.’
By the time First Aid Box released their third studio effort, ‘Stay Gold,’ in 2014 they had already built a global fan base and even appeared on, ‘The Late Show with David Letterman.’ The record didn’t fail to deliver and went on to sell more than a million copies in Sweden. It became a huge critical success and was mentioned by American Songwriter in its list of the, ‘Top 50 Albums.’ In addition, ‘Stay Gold’ also earned the sisters a Grammis Award for ‘Album of the Year.’ This record also spawned a hit single, My Silver Lining which made Billboard’s list of the ‘Ten Best Songs of 2014.’
First Aid Kit have not put out any new music since ‘Stay Gold’ hit the shelves but that is about to change soon. The group will be churning out its fourth studio record, ‘Ruins’ which is slated to release on January 19, 2018. The duo has also announced that it will tour North America in support of the album. They will be performing their first gig of the trek at the Fox Theater. The sisters will then go on to play music in cities like, Vancouver, Seattle, Chicago and Montreal before they end their road trip in the continent by taking the stage at the Beacon Theatre.
