Exo: The Beginning
As mentioned earlier, the band was formed by S.M. Entertainment. More specifically, it is the creation of Lee Soo-man, the founder of S.M. Entertainment, who wanted to create a boy band, which could make music simultaneously in Korean and Mandarin. For this reason, Exo was divided into Exo-K (Korean) and Exo-M (Mandarin). The band takes its name from the exoplanet.
After early lineup changes, the band made its TV debut on December 29, 2011, on GayoDaejun, a SBS (a South Korean television and radio network) annual event.
Soon after, the band released their debut single What Is Love, which was a phenomenal success in both China and South Korea. Debuting at No.88 on the Gaon Single Chart, What Is Love led to another single History. It debuted at No.68 on the Gaon Single Chart. But the single did even better in mainland China, where it debuted at No.6 on the Sina Music Chart.
Exo’s new found popularity led them to perform at Seoul’s Olympic Stadium and later at the Great Hall of the Beijing University.
Mama was the band’s debut EP and keeping with their strategy, was promoted separately in South Korea and China. Exo-K promoted the EP by appearing on South Korean music program The Music Trend, while Exo-M promoted it on China’s Top Chinese Music Awards. Mama turned out to be a huge hit in both countries. In South Korea, it debuted at No.1 on the Gaon Album Chart, while it debuted at No.2 on the Sina Album Chart. Mama however was no regional hit, it debuted at No.8 on the Billboard World Albums Chart as well.
By November 2012, Exo had been declared the Best New Asian Artist Group at the Mnet Asian Music Awards.
Debut Album & Awards
Exo’s debut studio album XOXO was released in 2013. While the album had two versions, one Mandarin and the other Korean, it was jointly promoted by Exo-K and Exo-M. XOXO was a huge hit and not just in South Korea and China. It debuted at the top of the Billboard World Albums Chart. A 12-track album, XOXO won a variety of prestigious awards such as the World Music Awards, KBS Music Festival, Seoul Music Awards, Mnet Asian Music Awards, MeI On Music Awards, and Golden Desk Awards.
XOXOs phenomenal success led the band to release its repackaged version later the same year, which contained three additional tracks.
The band’s second studio album Exodus was released in 2015. As a teaser, Call Me Baby was released two days before the album was released. A 10-track album, Exodus charted at the No.1 position on the Gaon Album Chart and US Billboard World Albums Chart. Like its predecessor, this album too won a variety of prestigious awards, including MBC Music Show Champion Awards, Golden Desk Awards and others. In addition to Call Me Baby another single that ruled the airwaves in South Korea and China was Love Me Right.
The band released its third studio album EX’ACT in 2016. This album, too, sold, over a million copies and won the Mnet Asian Music Award for Album of the Year. An 11-track album, EX’ACT became particularly famous for two singles, Lucky One and Monster. The album charted at No.1 on the Gaon Album Chart and No.8 in Japan. With the release of EX’ACT, Exo’s popularity reached Japan as well.
Soon they’ll be bringing their talent to the US. You can catch them live on stage with Exo tickets.
