Paslay was born in Abilene, Texas to a household that had nothing to do with music. He started his musical journey at age fifteen when he began playing the guitar. Even though his family never pushed him to play music, they never discouraged his interest and always supported his aspirations to be a professional musician. His earliest influences were the golden oldies of yesteryear, which his dad used to put on regularly.
One name in particular which Paslay singles out is Rich Mullins, who despite being a Christian artist had a huge impact on the aspiring country singer, mainly due to his creative melodies. Other artists who Paslay claims influenced his music are country legends Rodney Crowell and Johnny Cash. Cash, more so because of his inspired storytelling, something which Paslay tries to emulate.
In his youth, the diabetic Paslay toyed with the idea of becoming a pediatric endocrinologist so that he could help people with the same condition. But his passion for music soon over powered every other possible career path he had envisioned and he moved to Nashville with the aim of carving a career in music. Paslay enrolled into the Middle Tennessee State University in 2005 where he graduated with a Bachelor in Science degree. While studying, Paslay did whatever he could to break into Nashville’s famed Music Row.
He finally succeeded somewhat when he secured a deal with Cal IV Publishing. Under that deal he received song writing credits for multiple songs by major artists including Jake Owen, Donny and Marie Osmond, Lady Antebellum, rascal Flatts and the Eli Young Band. Some of his songs went on to be number one hits for the artists who sang them. However despite emerging as a promising and talented songwriter, Paslay wanted to establish himself as an artist.
He finally got his big break in 2011, when he was signed on by EMI Records Nashville. Paslay released his first single “Never Really Wanted” in 2011 and the song reached the top fifty on the Billboard’s country chart. In 2012, he released his second single, “If the Fish Don’t Bite”, which was also a success and peaked at fifty eight on the country chart.
However, Paslay achieved his biggest success in 2013 when he released the mega hit single “Friday Nights”. The song gave him his first top ten on the country charts as the song peaked at number eight. The song reached number two on the US Country Airplay chart and broke into the top fifty of the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. “Friday Nights” was also his first song to chart in another country, as it reached the eighth spot on Canada’s county chart.
Following the success of “Friday Nights”, Paslay announced the release of his debut album for 2014. The album was released in February and reached the thirty one spot on the Billboard 200 chart. It peaked at number four on the country chart, giving Paslay a top five hit with his debut effort.
