Lineup and early efforts
Enanitos Verdes was originally formed as a trio in 1979. The band featured Marciano Cantero as the vocalist and keyboard player, Daniel Piccolo played drums while Felipe Staiti was the band’s guitarist. The trio played in their native city for around five years before deciding to resettle in Buenos Aires. This move granted them the opportunity to play more shows, thus gaining further exposure.
It was during this time that the band recruited the talents of keyboard player Tito Davila and vocalist/guitarist Sergio Embrioni. In 1984, this quintet released their self-titled debut under the label of Mordisco. The album featured the notable single “Aun Sigo Cantando.”
After the departure of Embrioni from the band, the group released their sophomore album, produced by the famous Andres Calamaro. The album spawned hit singles like “La muralla Verde” and “Tus Viejas Cartas.” The latter album eventually became a commercial hit while the debut proved to be only modestly successful.
Road to success
For their third album, the group had signed with Sony Music. The album was released in 1987 and was followed a year later by Carrousel. The group then embarked on an extensive tour of South America that featured three big concert performances. The most notable among these gigs was their performance at the Vena del Mar Festival in front of an audience of more than fifty thousand. In their native city Enanitos Verdes performed before a crowd of more than thirty thousand.
A year later, the band broke up and Marciano Cantero embarked on a solo career. In 1992, the group reunited and produced another major album that was issued by EMI Music.
In 1998, the group signed with Polygram, a famous US record company. They released their label debut, Traccion Acustica, followed by a popular album that earned a Grammy nomination as the “Best Latin Rock Album.” The Latin pop and rock band continued their streak of success during the 2000’s with multiple Billboard charting albums and singles. The highest charting album for Enanitos Verdes was released in 2013. The album charted at number fourteen on the “Latin Pop Albums” chart.
The group hit new heights after their South American tour. Their groundbreaking performance at the prestigious Vena del Mar Festival in Chile brought them to the attention of critics and a wide audience. It was followed by a successful tour of Central America and participation in the Billboard Latin Forum Showcase.
