The Formation of Empire of the Sun
The duo behind Empire of the Sun, Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, met in 2000 when they were introduced by Simon Moore, the A&R executive for Steele, in Sydney. At the time, both of them were involved in different musical projects and so for the time being, began collaborating with each other on some projects.
After collaborating on a few songs for a Pnau album in 2006, the two started working together more under a new project called ‘Steelemore’. The two were living in separate cities and therefore spent a considerable amount of time accumulating enough material to begin seriously pursuing their new project. By 2007, they were ready to record their first album together.
The new project would eventually be renamed Empire of the Sun after the novel by J.G. Ballard novel which later became a 1987 movie by Steven Spielberg.
In 2008, Empire of the Sun released their first full length studio album called Walking on a Dream. Almost instantly, the album became a hit. It has since been certified double platinum in Australia and certified gold in the United Kingdom.
The band described their album as "a spiritual road movie." The lead single from the album and the title track, was such a massive hit across the world it went on to top charts in every corner of the globe.
It also helped that the band went on a massive international promotional tour. During the tour, they played in front of huge crowds at some of the biggest music festivals. This helped them get their sound across to a large number of people and rapidly expand their fan base.
Working on More Music
Empire of the Sun spent a couple of years after the release of their debut album touring very extensively. It is arguably one of the main reasons that the duo was able to gain worldwide attention and success so quickly.
After years of touring, the band decided they wanted to begin work on their second album. However, that had to wait while Littlemore took some time off to write music for Cirque du Soleil.
In March of 2013, the band released a little trailer which showed that their second album would be called Ice on the Dune and would be released by June 2013.
One of the singles from the album, ‘Alive’, was such a massive hit that it was used for commercials and was also featured in the EA Sports game Fifa 14.
Another two singles from the album, ‘Wandering Star’ and ‘Tonight’, were featured on the soundtrack for the movie Dumb and Dumber.
For this album as well, the duo toured extensively across the globe to promote their latest hits.
Empire of the Sun Live in Concert
In the summer of 2016, the band announced that they were gearing up to release their third full length studio album, Two Vines. The album featured numerous contributions from a variety of artists including Wendy Melvoin, Lindsey Buckingham, as well as two former David Bowie collaborators, Tim Lefebvre and Henry Hey.
According to Littlemore, the inspiration behind the albums was "this image of a modern city overtaken by jungle". The album was also recorded in Hawaii, which influenced its sound.
The lead single from the album, ‘High and Low’, was released in the summer.
Empire of the Sun is known for putting on eccentric live shows which heavily rely on visual art. These highly imaginative shows are something that all fans must see. Get yourself a pair of Empire of the Sun tickets today to see them in concert in your city.
