The Quartet consists of four members which includes two violinists, a cellist and a pianist. Both the violinists were the students of the noted violinist Oscar Schumsky and his reflection can easily be seen in their performance too. Seven Grammy awards were given to the Quartet for producing Best Chamber Music Performance while two were given for producing Best Classical Album.
Having the honor to grab the coveted Avery Fischer prize, three Gramophone awards and taking the venture of producing complete cycles of Bartok, Beethoven, Shostakovich and Mendelssohn String quartets in the world’s music capital are all accredited to it. The quartet has performed with a number of artists and has the honor to be on recordings with the greatest artists of our times. In 2000 the Musical America gave it the title of Ensemble of the Year for its infallible performances. In 2008 the most prestigious 18th Avery Fischer Prize was given to the Quartet for its mesmerizing performances. In 2011 Sony Classical announced its collaboration with Emerson String Quartet to mark their upcoming album. The album was released under the label with the commitment to coincide with the series of concert performances at Wigmore Hall in London and in New York City at Alice Tully Hall.
The year 2012 marked the sold-out performance of the band outside USA in China which was a huge success especially at Beijing. 2013 marked the 36th season of the quartet as an ensemble which was a matter of immense pride. This season’s planned trips and performances included Moscow, Paris, Vienna, London, Munich and Copenhagen to name the few. Keeping in view the immaculate projects and multiple highlights to the Quartet, some of the milestone achievements include 1981 and 1988 performance of six Bartok quartet performances in the single evening, the bestowing of Grammys and Avery Fischer Award along with the Gramophone Award was a matter of extreme honor and privilege. In 1997 the sold out performance of Beethoven’s Quartet at Lincoln Center New York was nothing short of praise and appreciation.
The thirty years of activity was celebrated in 2007 with an exclusive 20 years as a Deutsche Gramophone Recording artist. To mark the 25th anniversary celebrations, Emerson String Quartet has ventured in compiling a commemorative book titled Converging Lines. The book can be regarded as a pictorial history of the Quartet in the members own words and has never published photos, texts and graphics which are an asset to the Quartet members for sure. For the first time, the quartet had a change in their members as David Finckel left to pursue his own music career. The Quartet had its ultimate performance in 2013, as the five members performed together for the last time.
Finckel joined Emerson Quartet in 1979 and remained an active member of the Quartet ever since.
