Born in 1976 in Oak Park, Illinois, Eleanor is the younger of the two siblings. Playing, singing and writing music since a young age, both Matthew and Eleanor became interested in pursuing a professional career as American musicians. Creating their hit indie ensemble, The Fiery Furnaces in 2000, the brother and sister have been successful in achieving their childhood dream. Based in Brooklyn, The Fiery Furnaces has earned massive success, often being compared to The White Stripes. Their music has garage blues elements that are often incorporated into the group’s sound.
Performing music from the genres of indie pop and rock, experimental rock and psychedelic pop, the band was able to capture the attention of record label giants within a two years’ time. Signing with Rough Trade, Eleanor and Matthew started work on their debut studio release. The record Gallowsbird’s Bark was made available in 2003 with Matthew handling the instrumentation and songwriting duties and Eleanor providing majority of the vocals. With the success of the album, the siblings embarked on their 2004 tour. The duo hired Toshi Yano and Andy Knowles to handle the bass and drums, respectively. The group was also invited to perform at the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival held in England in the same year.
During this time, The Fiery Furnaces had already started working on their sophomore release and within a few months, came out with Blueberry Coat. The release was described as being a multifaceted concept album by Eleanor and Matthew. Songs such as "Quay Cur" boasted technical usage of electronic beats, slide guitars, mouth organs and abstract lullabies. Due to the positive critic reception, the duo decided to treat the British audiences with an EP album. The release featured bonus songs such as "Tropical Ice-Land" and "We Got Back the Plague". Their third studio album, Rehearsing My Choir followed a similar musical style. The siblings experimented with sounds and also invited their grandmother, Olga Sarantos to contribute to the songs. The following years saw five more studio releases, their most recent album hitting the shelves in 2009. The Fiery Furnaces are currently on hiatus, as the siblings are now focusing on establishing solo careers.
With their last concert performance at the Primavera Sound Festival in 2011, Matthew and Eleanor started working on solo albums. As a soloist, Eleanor Friedberger signed a contract with Merge Records in 2011. Her debut solo record was released in July 2011 named Last Summer. The album is a ten-track record that has received four out of five stars by critic publications such as AllMusic, the Guardian, Consequence of Sound and MusicOMH. Furthermore PopMatters, NME, SPIN and Paste Magazine have provided Eleanor Friedberger with an eight out ten cumulative review score. The album features musicians namely guitarist Eric Broucek, saxophonist Dylan Heaney, drummers Jim Orso and Tim Traynor and keyboardist Morgan Wiley. A few of the singles produced by Eleanor that have made ripples in the music scene include "My Mistakes", "Heaven" and "Roosevelt Island". The indie pop singer presented her sophomore release Personal Record in June 2013. Also produced by Merge Records, the album provided audiences with a total of twelve tracks.
