A Flourishing Young Talent
El Torito found his voice in church as a member of the San Antonio de Paula Church choir. For several years he sung inside the walls of the church and in 1982 was awarded his first opportunity to promote his talent. A local radio station sponsored a singing competition and against his father’s wishes, Torito entered the contest. After sneaking off into the qualification rounds, he eventually ended up as the winner. He made the best use of this breakthrough and started performing in front of public, participating in festivals and taking the stage alongside local groups in clubs and restaurants.
He earned a spot in the band Los Gentiles as the bass player and with them produced infectious music. The band mostly performed live and it was during one of these performances that he caught the attention of Gerardo Diaz – frontman of the popular band, Rosario Brothers. He was impressed by Héctor’s stage presence and improvisational skills, and made him a life changing offer. Diaz proposed the idea of a new band in which Acosta would be the lead singer. Diaz was known as “El Toro” meaning Bull and he gave Acosta the nickname “El Torito” which means Little Bull. Hence, “Los Toros” was formed and together the duo made some extraordinary music.
A National Hit
In 1991, El Torito along with the other members - lvis Garcia, Alcequies, Luis Jose and Robin Joel Vasquez released their first album “Se Soltaron Los Toros (They Let The Bulls Loose)”. Torito’s voice was heard all over the Dominican radio and the record became a huge hit. Héctor Acosta was especially lauded for his brilliant vocals and went on to enjoy immense success in the coming years. After recording numerous hits with the band including the landmark album “Raices”, Acosta decided to go solo in 2006. His debut album titled “Sigo Siendo Yo (Still Being Me)” produced the popular number Me Voy (I'm Going) and it peaked at 48th position on the Billboard Latin chart. He slowly cemented his place in the tropical music world and took the fans by storm with incredible tracks like Sin Perdón, Me Vió Llorar (She Saw Me Crying) and Tu Veneno (Your Poison).
