For more than twenty years, Fisher has been the cantor at the Catskills Kutsher’s Hotel, especially during the high hotels. In 2005, Dudu Fisher became the Chief Cantor of the famous New York Synagogue. In the world of theatre, he first saw Les Miserables in London during the eighties. Despite having no prior experience as an actor, he auditioned for a part in a production of Les Miserables. Amazingly, he landed the leading role, playing Jean Valjean, and played it during the Israeli production’s lifetime, from 1987 to 1990. He gained fame for this role and was soon invited to play the same role on the Broadway production of Les Miserables, which he did from 1993 to 1994.
He then played the role in the West End production of the musical, in London, and also in the production staged before Queen Elizabeth II. Other than Les Miserables, he has also been active in a number of other productions. He is also well known for Never on Friday, a solo Off–Broadway show, which he has performed in the US, in Israel and in many other parts of the world. He has also toured Israel as part of the cast of Over the Rainbow, in which he performed more than forty Broadway show tunes.
He has performed for President Bill Clinton, as well as for Hillary Clinton, the British Royal family and the Thai Royal family. He was also part of a performance in which the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under conductor Zubin Mehta, performed. This performance as broadcast all over the world, including in France. He has also received accolades for this performance with other orchestras, including the Queens Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. He has also recorded an album for the London Symphony Orchestra. It was an album of show tunes.
He also made history when he became the first Israeli artist to be allowed to sing in the Soviet Union even before Perestroika. He performed with David D’Or, a renowned contra tenor, for Pope Benedict XVI, when he visited Israel in 2009. Added to his performances on various world stages and in synagogues, he has also released more than twenty five albums with songs in English, Yiddish and Hebrew. These include cantorial and classical pieces, as well as music composed for children.
He was part of the cast of the animated movie, The Prince of Egypt, released in 1998 by Steven Spielberg. In the movie, he sang the part of Moses. He also contributed a song to an album of The Friends of Natasha, with David D’Or, Meir Banai and Eran Zur. He recorded a song for Pioneers For A Cure, titled Saleinu, with the proceeds from it benefiting Ezer Mizion.
