In the era of Dr. Stevens as the first President of the Board of Directors, the outside soloists delivered three to four performances in a year.  In addition to Peters Commons, the soloists also performed in other locations where the cost of the performers was covered with the ticket sales. Drs. Paul Laube and Clark Stevens changed the name of the UD Symphonic Orchestra to the University Civic Orchestra in 1957. The sole purpose was to reflect that the members are selected from the Dubuque community and the university alike. However, in 1963, the board decided to change the name of the University Civic Orchestra to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra .

In 1986, Nicholas Palmer took the place of the former music director and composer, Mahmoud. Under his directorship, the orchestra had seen colossal growth in terms of the ticket sales, audiences and public support. The number of concerts had increased from five to twenty seven over a period of six years; a feat never accomplished in the history of the symphony. On top of that, Palmer had earned the title of Conductor Emeritus in 1999 in light of his fruitful contribution to the success of orchestra.

The first performance of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra was held at Terrence Donahue Hall at Clarke College in October 1963. The symphony has experienced tremendous growth and prestige under the music director and composer, William Intriligator. Under his directorship after the season of 1999-2000, the Iowa based symphony arranges around twelve concerts each year where more than seventy five different musicians deliver twenty five different performances. Its repertoire includes the classical, chamber, opera and pop concerts. The credit goes to Intriligator for instructing and blending all the elements necessary to deliver a magical performance. Besides being a vigilant director and composer, he exudes a warm sense of enthusiasm towards the audience and walks every extra mile to make them feel happy.

The orchestra aims to boost the tri-state community life through its educational programs and live musical performances. The symphony arranges two youth training programs like Dubuque Youth Symphony Orchestra and Dubuque Youth String Ensemble where the students audition annually to become a part of it. The company employs nearly sixty professional musicians of which some are substitute players while others are contract musicians.  Nearly one-fifth of the contract musicians are local while the rest belong to large metropolitan cities like Des Moines, Madison, Chicago, Milwaukee and Iowa.

The Dubuque symphony is a family friendly event where the kids and parents can experience tons of fun. The local choirs, trained singers and the Dubuque ballet are enough to put you in a great Christmas spirit. The entire ensemble artfully lifts the show to its finest hour with fantastic sound and clearly strong vocals. You will love every minute of this fabulous concert as the instrumental music is perfectly harmonized by the soloists and the choir.  All you need in your pockets are Dubuque Symphony Orchestra tickets to revive some of the older memories and build some new ones.

The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra is one name that is on everyone’s lips nowadays. Staying true to its passion of wonderful music performances, the orchestra embarks on the quest to provide you with something bigger and better this time around. The Dubuque Symphony Orchestra tickets are in great demand during the season because it is the time of the year that you all have been waiting for.
