Dropkick Murphys was formed in Massachusetts in 1996 by singer Mike McCoglan, guitar player Rick Barton, drummer Jeff Ema and bass guitarist Ken Casey. As of now Ken Casey is the only founder member left with the group and the other members are Matt Kelly (drums), Al Barr (lead vocals), James Lynch (guitars & vocals), Tim Brennan (mandolin, accordion and vocals) and Jeff DaRossa (banjo, whistle, acoustic guitar and bouzouki). The band was signed by the famous independent punk recording company Hellcat Records and it was under this record label that they released five of their albums. Dropkick Murphys have also gained popularity due to their regular appearance at various live shows and most importantly appearing at the weekly concerts of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations which take place around the city of Boston. They are a huge fan of Boston Red Sox and their single “Tessie” is the anthem of this world famous baseball team and is played after all home game wins.
 
One single of Dropkick Murphy called “I’m Shipping Up To Boston” was featured in the famous crime thriller movie The Departed, this movie was awarded four Academy Awards and featured acclaimed actors like Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio. The sixth album of Dropkick Murphys was released in 2007 under their own label Born & Bred Records and the name of the album was The Meanest of Times, this was ranked at #49 on Rolling Stones Magazine list of Top Albums for 2007 and it sold an amazing 28000 copies in the very first week of its release. This album was the first one to reach #20 slot on US Billboard Charts and also charted at #98 on Irish Charts.
 
Their latest album till date is Going Out in Style this was released after a gap of four years in March 2011 under Born & Bred Records and was loved by both the fans and critics. This album got favorable reviews and Allmusic gave it a four star out of five and The A.V Club gave it a B+. Going Out in Style featured guest appearances from some fine artists like comedian Lenny Clarke, NOFX, acclaimed rock musician Bruce Springsteen, Chris Cheney and singer Fat Mike. This was also the bands best charting album since their debut as it sold an amazing 43000 copies in the initial first week of release and debuted at #6 position on the Billboard 200 Charts.
