Donald Fagen, the beginning
Fagen was born in Passaic, New Jersey. His father was an accountant, while his mother, a housemaker, who had been a swing singer. As a child, Fagen moved a lot and finally settled down in a suburb of New Jersey. Fagen hated his new neighborhood and grew rebellious. Introvert by nature, Fagen found a love for late-night radio. This would inspire him to record an album The Nightfly, decades later.
As a child, Fagen started listening to Chuck Berry and other R&B musicians. A cousin, during his formative years, recommended a genre of music which would later become Fagen’s lifelong passion. After catching the Jazz bug, Fagen frequently visited a jazz club in Greenwich Village, called the Village Vanguard. As a teenager, there Fagen found himself hanging with greats Miles Davis, Charles Mingus and Bill Evans.
Even though he played the baritone horn in his high school’s marching band, his newfound passion for jazz got him interested in playing the piano. In his teenage years, he also developed love for soul, Motown and funk and became a big fan of Ray Charles, Henry Mancini and the Boswell Sisters.
After graduation, he enrolled himself in Bard College to study English literature. During his time there, he met Walter Becker. Years later, the two would cofound Steely Dan.
Donald Fagen and Steely Dan
Steely Dan was formed in the summer of 1970. The band ruled the charts and airwaves in the 1970s and early 80s when it broke up. However it got back together in 1993 and since then has stayed together.
Described as one of the 100 greatest musical artists of all time by VH1, Steely Dan released nine studio albums, out of which eight were certified in the US. Aja, released in 1977 remains the Steely Dan’s most commercially successful album, with hit singles Peg, Deacon Blues and Aja. It also won the Grammy for Best Engineered Non-Classical Recording.
Fagen’s solo career
Fagen’s solo career started in 1981 when Steely Dan brokeup. Since then, he has released four studio albums, namely The Nightfly, Kamakiriad, Morph the Cat and Sunken Condos. Out of these, his first two albums have enjoyed phenomenal success.
The Nightfly, which was released in 1982, debuted at No.11 on the US Billboard 200. Selling over a million copies, the album was certified Platinum in the US. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award. Two of the singles from the album, New Frontier and I.G.Y. became chartbusting hits in many countries.
In 1993, Fagen released Kamakiriad. Debuting at No.10 on the Billboard 200, the album’s title was a Japanese translation of praying mantis. Kamakiriad was also nominated for Album of the Year at the 1993 Grammys. Tomorrow’s Girls and Snowbound were two of the most popular songs from this album.
Fagen’s last two album have done well on the Billboard 200, with Sunken Condos debuting at the No.12 spot, but failed to garner the kind of popularity he enjoyed earlier with his first two albums. Nevertheless, Fagen remains a force to reckon with in the world of jazz rock music.
