Breaking the Chains
Three young rockers from Los Angeles with dreams of making it big in the music industry surfaced on the glam metal scene in the late 1970s. They were, Don Dokken, Juan Croucier and Greg Pecka, collectively known as Dokken. The band recorded its debut extended play, ‘Back in the Streets’ at the Tennessee Studio and made it available for public to enjoy in 1979. Produced by Michael Wagener and Dokken themselves, the EP created buzz among fans of metal music and received three stars out of five from AllMusic.
After the release of, ‘Back in the Streets,’ the trio hired “Wild” Mick Brown as the drummer and in 1983 came out with its first studio album. The record was titled, ‘Breaking the Chains’ and it got people talking about them. Issued by Elekra Records, it spawned a single, Breaking the Chains which became very popular. The song not only featured in the 2006 video game, ‘Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories’ but was also labeled as the, ‘62nd Greatest Hard Rock Song’ by VH1. In addition to that, Breaking the Chain charted at the thirty second spot on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks.
Becoming the talk of the town
Once they had grabbed the attention of the American audience with, ‘Breaking the Chain,’ all members of Dokken contributed their creative ideas, penned down fifteen songs and released their record, ‘Tooth and Nail.’ It hit the markets in 1984 and became their first studio effort to cross one million sales in the United States. The critics were impressed with their sophomore album and many publications published positive reviews regarding it including, AllMusic and Kerrang! It gave three singles, Into the Fire, Just Got Lucky and Alone Again out of which the former featured in the film, ‘A Nightmare on the Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.’
Dokken reached the peak of success when they released two more record, ‘Under Lock and Key,’ and ‘Back for the Attack’ in 1985 and 1987 respectively. Both records were certified platinum in the United States and received positive feedback from the critics. The latter album became their highest charting studio effort to date as it entered the Billboard 200 at thirteenth spot and collected three stars out of five from AllMusic.
Dokken later went on to record many glam metal defining albums such as, ‘Dysfunctional,’ ‘Shadowlife’ and ‘Erase the Slate’ all of which exceeded the expectations of their fans. All of these albums provided some rocking metal tunes and were approved by the people. However, after 1999 to 2008, the band’s popularity started to decline but they kept on producing music and performed at Rocklahoma in 2007 and 2008.
The quartet’s last record came out five years ago in 2012. Titled, ‘Broken Bones,’ the album was released by Frontier Records. It was produced by the lead member of the band, Don Dokken. The record consisted of eleven songs on the tracklist including the cover of the famous folk rock ballad, Today which was released by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Jefferson Airplane.
