Born in the British Columbian city of Nanaimo on November 16, 1964, Diana Krall grew up surrounded by the delicious melodies coming out of her father’s piano. Her father was an ardent piano player and a devoted fan of Fats Weller while her mother displayed her marvelous vocals at the community choir. With her parents such dedicated music enthusiasts, it was no surprise that Krall started playing the piano at the tender age of four. At fifteen, she went on to play jazz at a local restaurant. Later, she received a musical scholarship for Berkeley College of Music and attended it. She moved to Los Angeles, played jazz for three years, and then moved to Toronto, Canada.
The first album of Diana Krall hit the market in 1993 with the name “Stepping Out.” The talent depicted in the album caught the attention of producer Tommy LiPuma who decided to produce her second album “Only Trust Your Heart.” Krall was slowly and steadily climbing the ladders of fame, and with her third album in 1996, “All for You: A Dedication to the Nat King Cole Trio,” she earned her first Grammy Award nomination. The album stayed on the Billboard Jazz charts for a whopping seventy weeks. Accompanied by Russel Malone on guitar and Christian McBride on bass, Krall continued to amaze her listeners with her melodies in the fourth album “Love Scenes” in 1997. She followed it by a Christmas album in 1998 titled “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”
Diana Krall received the acclaim that the deserved with her “When I Look in Your Eyes” album in 1999. Her popularity literally exploded as she not only got her first Grammy Award but her album was the first jazz album to be nominated for the Album of the Year award in twenty five years. Her mainstream success was apparent from the featuring of her songs on episodes of Sex in the City and several feature films. 2001 was another great year for the prolific musician as she collaborated with legendary orchestrator Claus Ogerman on her super hit album “The Look of Love,” which not only reached the top ten position on the Billboard 200 chart but also achieved an unbelievable quintuple platinum status in Canada. She earned three prestigious Juno Awards for her hard work on the fantastic album.
Diana Krall married the legendary English rock musician Elvis Costello in 2003 and started writing her own songs with her husband as her lyricist. The collaboration resulted in the hit album “The Girl in the Other Room” in 2004 that reached the top five in United Kingdom while making its way to the Top 40 Albums Chart in Australia. She continued dazzling in the realm of jazz music by featuring in albums of other renowned artists. In 2009, she released her album titled “Quiet Nights” that debuted on the number three position on the Canadian Albums and the US Billboard 200 charts and reached the top position on the charts of many European countries. It also had the honor of being her 9th number one album on the Top Jazz Albums chart.
