One of America’s most renowned artists, Margret Wander, more popularly known as Dessa is preparing to perform at multiple venues this season. Born in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Wander attended the Southwest High School. She then went onto graduate, acquiring a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota where she studied Philosophy. After completing her education in 1999, the artist started working with a medical manufacturing company as a technical writer. She was soon seen quitting this job to pursue a career as a full-time artist. Wander started her professional career by joining the indie hip hop ensemble Doomtree.
Established in 2001, the group consists of seven members, namely Cecil Otter, Sims, P.O.S., Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, Lazerbreak and Dessa. Wander was invited to become a part of the group when she and P.O.S. had a chance encounter, since they were living on the same street. P.O.S. who was looking for a rapper, found one living just across the street. The two also became involved in a personal relationship, which ended a little time after. Wander is still an active part of the ensemble and performs with the members regularly.
Together Wander along with her band mates has performed with artists such as I Self Devine, Gayngs, Mr. Gene Poole, Crescent Moon and Joe Mabbott. Over a career of more than twelve years, the seven members have released eight studio albums, all of which have been produced by Doomtree Records. The indie hip hop group has been named by Time Magazine amongst 2012’s "11 Great Bands You Don’t Know (But should)" list.
Apart from performing as a rapper with Doomtree, Margret Wander also performs as a solo artist. She came forth with her debut EP in 2005 named "False Hopes" which she released via Doomtree Records. The EP consisted of five tracks that ran for a total of fifteen minutes. Dessa was seen collaborating with artists such as Jessy Greene, Cecil Otter and Sims on tracks namely "Mineshaft", "Everything Floats" and "Press On", respectively. The release was awarded 3.5 stars out of 5 by Sputnikmusic. After the success of her EP, Dessa started working on a non-fiction book named "Spiral Bound" that she published in 2009.
Her debut solo album was released in 2010 titled "A Badly Broken Code". This release too was brought forth via Doomtree Records and consisted of fifteen tracks. The total time of the album amounted to forty seven minutes. On this album, Dessa was seen collaborating with artists such as P.O.S., Jessy Greene and Matthew Santos. The album garnered positive responses as critics and publications such as Robert Christgau and The A.V. Club gave the record a rating of "A-". Moreover, Tiny Mix Tapes and HipHopDX awarded the release a four out of five star rating. "A Badly Broken Code" was also listed amongst the top 20 albums of the year 2010 by The A.V. Club.
In 2011, Wander came forth with her second studio release named "Castor, the Twin". Consisting of eleven tracks, the artist presented audiences with newer sounds that comprised of live instrumentations on mandolin, vibraphone, piano, timpani and double bass. The album gathered eight out of ten stars by No Ripcord and three out of five stars by Punknews.org. Dessa’s most recent release is her June 2013 studio album "Parts of Speech". The record consists of twelve tracks and features artists namely Paper Tiger and Lazerbreak. Selling fifty eight hundred copies in the first week alone, Dessa’s third album has achieved great popularity and fame.
