Dennis DeYoung is also a musician who plays the keyboards and accordion, as well as a record producer who has worked on a number of albums. He grew in Roseland within Chicago and entered the world of music in 1961, at the age of fourteen, when he founded a three piece combo with neighbors John Panozzo and Chuck. They were soon joined by John Curulewski and John Young, naming their band Tradewinds.
Dennis DeYoung ’s first band was soon renamed as TW4 and then as Styx, in 1970. During the same time, he was teaching music in Chicago and performing with the band at Chicago’s many venue. Their first song, Lady, lead to much fame for the band, from national to international stardom. He was the band’s lead singer as well as accordion and keyboard player. He was also its record producer and songwriter, writing seven of eight top ten songles the band churned out.
With Styx, Dennis DeYoung released hit singles such as Show Me The Way, Best of Times, Mr Roboto, Lady, Don’t Let It End, Come Sail Away and Babe. He rapidly gained fame for his mastery of the keyboard, as one of the most prominent players of the instrument in rock, going so far as to be ranked by Contemporary Keyboard magazine as one of the Greatest Rock Keyboardists. His creativity in music, by using a modular Moog to record keyboard tracks, would inspire Emerson, Lake & Palmer to release what is regarded as one of their best albums.
Dennis DeYoung ’s solo career began with the release of his debut album, Desert Moon, whose title single was a top ten hit. Released in 1984, it was certified gold in Canada before the year ended. He went on to release two more albums during the eighties, one of which contained a song used in the Karate Kid II soundtrack. His songs also received a lot of airplay, as did their music videos. After a five year hiatus, Styx reformed, releasing a song that ranked third on the Billboard Hot 100 charts.
He is also an actor, who was part of the cast of the famous musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, appearing in more than two hundred of its performances playing the role of Pontius Pilate. This would eventually lead to a Broadway inspired album and work on a musical of his own, titled The Hunchback of Notre Dame. He created a show which featured him playing many of his songs, which was first performed at the Rosemont Theatre and eventually lead to an album, released in 2004. Soon after, he began touring the US with a fifty pice orchestra and a five piece rock band. In 2005, he played a role in the movie, The Perfect Man and in 2006, he performed on Canadian Idol. In 2008, he performed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and performed in the Night of the Proms tour in Germany, where many saw him sing live after buying Dennis DeYoung tickets .
