Born in November 1940, in the
Detroit, Michigan, Dennis Coffey is an amazing guitarist as well as a well acclaimed studio musician. He has made several soul and R&B recordings over the years, all of which have made their mark in the music industry to a great deal. Dennis Coffey has been performing with several legendary groups. With the diverse exposure Dennis Coffey has got, his ventures included bands like Del Shannon, George Clinton and Funkadelic and The Temptations among many others. Making popular music known every where, Dennis Coffey has worked with several iconic artists as well as producers and writers of our industry. Developing love for guitar at the tender age of thirteen Dennis Coffey played his first session at the Detroit's MackenzieHigh School as a 15 years old sophomore in 1955, doing backing for Vic Gallon for the song I'm Gone which was released on Gondola record label. Dennis Coffey joined The Royaltones during 1960s; The Royaltones had many hits like Poor Boy in 1958 and Flamingo Express from 1961. This band also did several other sessions with artists such as Del Shannon among many others.
 
Dennis Coffey has done several performances including one with Funk Brothers which is a studio band, for some of their recordings done for Motown Records. Dennis Coffey is the one who introduced the hard rock guitar music to the talented record producer of Motown, Norman Whitfield's recordings. Some of the other techniques which Dennis Coffey introduced included distortion, wah-wah and Echoplex tape-loop delay. We can listen to his creations in form of the singles, Cloud Nine along with Ball of Confusion (That's What the World Is Today) and the Psychedelic Shack. Dennis Coffey has also played on many number one hit singles like War, The Isley Brothers' and It's Your Thing by Edwin Starr, Someday We'll Be Together of Diana Ross & The Supremes along with Band of Gold by Freda Payne. Dennis Coffey has also done music score for film like Black Belt Jones which is a blaxploitation film.
 
With the year of 1971, Dennis Coffey was seen recording Scorpio. The single was a huge success and sold more than a million copies. This instrumental single reached at number six on the Billboard pop charts list. Scorpio featured Bob Babbitt on the bass and the song was given a gold disc by the RIAA. In January, 1972 Dennis Coffey was invited to give a performance on the Soul Train, which was a famous television show. Dennis Coffey was the first white artist who was invited in the show and he played his single Scorpio.
 
In 1972, Dennis Coffey followed up with another record which was titled as Taurus. After that Dennis Coffey was seen producing solo albums,  of which many were for the Westbound and
Sussex record labels. It was at Sussex Records when Dennis Coffey produced and arranged the largest selling Nice To Be With You which is a single by Gallery. Dennis Coffey made it possible along with Mike Theodore. Dennis Coffey also published a memoir in 2004 with the title Guitars, Bars and Motown Superstars.
