Listening to the rock music is one thing, but listening to the rock music by a band that is renowned as one of the pioneers of modern rock, and watching them play with their chords and voice is an altogether different experience! Deep Purple is the band that can be your source for such an experience in today’s music scene.
Based in Hartford, England, the rock band Deep Purple was founded in 1968. Also known as Roudabout, the band is considered to be having a major role in creation and development of modern hard rock and heavy metal genres of music along with legendary bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin. Throughout their career they have been experimenting with their music, making it impossible for the critics to categorize their music into any one specific genre. Their musical style seems to be mostly an amalgamation of classical music with progressive rock, pop and blues rock.
Currently the band comprises of Steve Morse, a recent addition to the band as guitarist, Ian Paice the drummer, Ritchie Blackmore the guitarist and Ian Gillan on leading vocals. The band was formed in 1968 when Chris Curtis, a drummer from the band named Searchers, took the initiative and persuaded Tony Edwards, a businessman from London, to finance the formation of a new band named Roundabout. It took him almost a whole year to bring together all the important members, make a company with the name of HEC Corporation, taking initials from Ron Hire, Tony Edwards and John Coletta. Coletta and Hire were Edward’s partners. Soon after the formation, Curtis dropped out and the band and the company continued without him.
The band released their debut album titled Shades of Deep Purple in 1968. The album provided them a great start, and their journey of musical excellence continued with their second album The Book of Teliesyn, and Deep Purple, their third album. Despite their increasing popularity, the band had a struggling time in late 1960s owing to their recording company Tetragrammaton going out of work. During late 1960s and early 1970s the band also underwent some reconfiguration, with replacement of its vocalist, and it was that time when Ian Gillan was inducted to the band.
The band was again doing a good business after signing with its new recording company and becoming increasingly popular among the masses when some internal conflicts and increasing tensions rose among the members. Eventually the band was broken in 1976, and all members carried on with their side projects and solo performances, before meeting up again in 1984. The band had a turbulent course through history during 1980s, having frequent break ups and reunions, before Steve Morse joined in 1994 and provided Deep Purple a stable ground and management. The band released its new album titled Perpendicular in 1996, and showed to the world Deep Purple still has the soul and unique touch that was always considered its characteristic feature. Their music was gaining maturity by the time they released their album titled Abandon in 1998. Deep Purple also embarked on extensive touring during late 1990s, promoting its music through the United States and Canada initially, and on international destinations later on. They also performed in concerts and events that were globally celebrated, including Live 8 for environmental protection, and Concerto World Tour.
For the great music Deep Purple has produced, and its unique and conspicuous rhythm, it has been awarded with many titles and international awards. Many of the albums produced by Deep Purple have been rated as best sellers. They have sold over 100 million albums so far, and are rated at number 22 on VH1’s Greatest Artists of Hard Rock Program. Deep Purple also has the privilege of being included into the Guinness Book of World Records under the title of World’s Loudest Pop Group.
