Death from Above 1979 (DfA1979) is one of the most renowned dance punk duos in North America. The Canadian rockers began their career at the turn of the millennium and their two-stage career has produced some of the best albums in the genre. The Toronto-based duo consists of Jesse F. Keeler, who handles synths and bass, while the vocals and drums are worked on by Sebastien Grainger. After almost half a decade hiatus and a year into their second studio album’s release, they’re out on a North American tour. So grab Death from Above 1979 tickets and enjoy their concerts.
Although the duo has claimed comically outrageous stories about how they met, they actually met during a Sonic Youth concert. That is when their creative minds conceived the idea for what is now DfA1979. Grainger, the front man, had been active in the music industry even before the formation of DfA1979. His drumming techniques have been widely appreciated by rock lovers garnering him a sort of a cult following. He currently leads his other band that goes by Sebastien Grainger and The Mountains. Keeler, on the other hand, is a highly lauded instrumentalist in his home country. His instruments of choice include the guitar, keyboards, bass, saxophone and drums. During DfA1979’s hiatus from 2006 to 2011 due to their breakup, Keeler formed and led his other duo MSTRKRFT, with recording engineer Al-P.
Death from Above 1979 debuted with an EP in 2002 which was titled Heads Up. Their first full-feature studio album, You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, hit the shelves two years later in fall. The album debuted among the Top 100 on the UK Albums Chart. Following soon after was their first single “Romantic Rights” that reached the Top 60 on the UK Singles Chart. After that, DfA1979 released two more singles, “Blood on Our Hands” and “Black History Month.” The former was a success in the British Isles and Europe while the latter received great reviews in North America. By 2005, the duo released their first remix album, Romance Bloody Romance, which peaked in among the Top 30 on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums.
Unfortunately, at the prime of their career, Keeler and Grainger broke on account of creative and musical differences in 2006. The inevitable break up was discouraged by the fans and their record label. However, since they both ended the music affair on good terms, it was accepted by everyone. But their fans weren’t willing to give up on DfA1979, so with their efforts Grainger finally announced the reformation in 2011. Their new single was performed at various events in 2012 which was seen as their re-debut. A Canadian tour to follow these events also marked their official reentry into the dance punk scene.
In 2014, Death from Above 1979 released the single “Trainwreck 1979,” which debuted among the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. It also became the lead to their latest and second studio album, The Physical World, which reached international markets in fall that year. Upon released, it climbed the Top Rock Albums chart to number seven while reaching the Top 5 on three other Billboard charts. These include the Top Alternative Albums, the Top Hard Rock Albums and the Top Canadian Albums charts. An overall position of twenty eight on the Billboard 200 also brought in international fame and wider recognition for DfA1979. Other singles from the album include “Government Trash,” “Virgins,” “Cheap Talk” and the titular “The Physical World.”
DfA1979 is now out on a worldwide tour and their locations include major cities in their home country and the US. They will be headlining many festivals with notable bands such as Iration, Deftones and Incubus. So grab Death from Above 1979 tickets and enjoy their brilliant music, live.
