David Sanborn was born in Florida and raised in Missouri. During the early years of his life, David was diagnosed with polio and his physician advised him to play saxophone in order to facilitate his breathing system. Sanborn started playing saxophone for health reasons; who knew that he would become such a prominent musician within years. Learning the instrument on his own, he was seen playing blues music with Little Milton and Albert King when he was only fourteen. The then emerging artist went to the University of Iowa to obtain a degree in music. In 1967, he became a part of Paul Butterfield’s Band and learned many secrets of compositions and sounds. For another seven years, he kept on experimenting with different genres including free jazz and smooth jazz, until he felt that he was now polished enough to record a studio album on his own.
The year 1975 brought new beginnings for the talented David Sanborn as he released the timeless classic album, ‘Taking Off’. The 1979 album ‘Hideaway’ was the biggest hit of seventies and some of its songs were featured in movies as well. With the beginning of next decade, a collaboration of Marcus Miller with David Sanborn was seen prior to the release of the next album, ‘Voyeur’. The single ‘All I Need Is You’ won Sanborn the first Grammy Award of his career. His well-esteemed career continued with one after another hit, winning him another Grammy for the album ‘Double Vision’, followed by ‘Close Up’ in 1986. The increased popularity of jazz and soul music during this tenure made him a prominent star all over the country. Over all, he recorded twenty four studio albums during his career, out of which seven albums received gold or platinum certification. His latest album ‘Only Everything’ came into picture after a successful five decade long career.
David Sanborn is known for playing music with different artists and bands. He has performed in association with the most prestigious music names such as Sir Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, Billy Joel, James Brown and many others. Apart from this, Sanborn is a great actor who has worked in dozens of films and TV Series. He is a regular guest on the live shows including the ‘Late Night with David Letterman’. The multi-talented celebrity has also hosted some TV and radio shows during the eighties and nineties. He is honored to have his name inducted on the St. Louis Walk of Fame.
