David Van Cortlandt Crosby is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is an artist who has had both a hugely successful solo career and has also founded three bands, The Byrds, Crosby Stills & Nash (CSN), that was also sometimes joined by Neil Young as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young to become CSNY and CPR.
The Early Life of David Crosby
Born in Los Angeles, Crosby comes from a prominent family. His father was the Academy Award winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby, who was a descendant of the Van Rensselaer family. His mother was Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead, a member of the prominent Van Cortlandt family. His older brother Ethan Crosby is also a musician.
He showed an inclination towards music from a very young age. He dropped out of Santa Barbara City College to become a musician. In 1963, with the help of producer Jim Dickson, Crosby recorded his first solo material. Cosby had taken his first steps towards stardom and there was no holding him back after that.
The Musical Career of David Crosby
David Crosby’s musical career is expansive and prolific. In addition to pursuing his solo endeavors, he has also been a part of numerous successful bands and has also collaborated with a host of different musicians. Today, Crosby is regarded as one of the most iconic American musicians alive. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame two times: once as a member of his band The Byrds and once as a member with CSN. He has also worked on five albums which are included in the Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
In 1963, The Byrds was formed by Crosby, Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Michael Clarke, and Gene Clark. They were an instant hit and received widespread recognition and praise for their charismatic presence, their catchy songs and stellar songwriting. Their signature sound can be described as electric folk-rock and this influenced numerous artists and musicians for years to come. Some of their more notable hits include ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’, and ‘Turn! Turn! Turn!’
In 1967, Crosby left The Byrds and founded Crosby, Stills and Nash (CSN) with Graham Nash and Stephen Stills. This marked the beginning of what was to become a lifelong collaboration between these artists. Music critics and fans alike praised their incredible harmonies, timeless songs, as well as their incredible musicianship. So much so that CSN has even been called ‘the voice of a generation.’
In 1969, the trio won a Grammy Award for the Best New Artist. Their debut self-titled album is included in the list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by the Rolling Stones Magazine. It contained timeless hits such as ‘Wooden Ships’ and ‘Guinnevere.’ To this day, Crosby records and tours with CSN and CSNY, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and performs as a duo with Graham Nash.
In 1996, CPR or Crosby, Pevar& Raymond was founded with Crosby and pianist James Raymond and session guitarist Jeff Pevar. James Raymond is actually Crosby’s son. CPR released four albums in total, two full length studio albums and two live albums, before breaking up in 2004.
As someone who has always had a deep passion for music, Crosby has always been doing solo work on the side. However, it wasn’t until 1971 that his first solo album was released titled If I Could Only Remember My Name. The album featured contributions from artists such as Joni Mitchell, Santana, Nash, the Grateful Dead, Young and members of Jefferson Airplane.
In 2014, he released Croz, his first full length studio album made up of solo material from over 20 years. It debuted on a number of Billboard Charts including:

· Number 2 on the Top Folk Album Chart
Crosby has also collaborated extensively with a number of different artists. Probably the most frequent collaborations which he undertook were with Nash, whom he has recorded and played with on numerous occasions. Crosby has also worked with artists such as Phil Collins, Joni Mitchell, Gary Wright, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Rick Roberts, Dave Mason, Art Garfunkel, Elton John, Carole King, and J.D. Southerner.
