When David Copperfield performs levitation or some of his other spectacular illusions, the crowds are thoroughly captivated. David Copperfield, a native of New Jersey, was a natural at performing illusionary tricks and wowed his neighbors as a child. He went by the title "Davino the Boy Magician." At age 12, David Copperfield became the youngest person to be inducted into the Society of American Magicians.  He was deemed qualified to teach a course in magic when he was only sixteen, acquiring a job at New York University. These early experiences paved the way to his future as a legend in the art of magic.

Originally David Seth Kotkin, he assumed the stage name David Copperfield after the famous Dickens' character, when he began performing for musicals. His love for literature would later lead him to collaborate with such illustrious figures as Joyce Carol Oates, Dean Koontz and Ray Bradbury and publish an anthology of original fiction that deals with illusion and magic. He also wrote an essay for NPR's series This I believe. In 1996, Copperfield worked with Francis Ford Coppola, David Ives and Eiko Ishioka on a Broadway show "Dreams & Nightmares"—a highly imaginative, sophisticated show that broke box office records.

David Copperfield is the first living magician to be included in Hollywood's world famous Walk of Fame. David Copperfield received the title Magician of the Year from the Academy of Magical Arts in 1980 and in 1987. Copperfield has had an extensive career on the silver screen. He appeared on ABC and CBS, after being discovered by Joseph Cates, a Broadway producer who also made television specials, and on whose program "The Magic of ABC" Copperfield appeared in 1977. There have been as many as twenty Copperfield TV specials between 1977 and 2001.
