On television, David was most recently seen on the show called "Celebrity Apprentice." Cassidy was born in New York City to parents who were both actors. Thus he grew up in a family with a strong art background. His parents were of Irish, Swiss and German origin. Because his parents were both working actors, they had to travel a lot. Cassidy was then brought up by his grandparents in New Jersey who raised him in a middle class neighborhood. When he was very young, he found out that his parents had been divorced but had not told him. This is what pushed him into theatre and acting as a child, as that turned out to be his outlet and a way to freely expressing his emotions. Later on, his father married another actress, Shirley Jones with whom Cassidy then moved in until he had his own career.
Cassidy made his Broadway debut in 1969 in a production called "The Fig Leaves are Falling." Gauging the potential and talent of David, the casting director invited him over for a screen test. Soon Cassidy moved to Los Angeles.
In 1969, he signed a contract with Universal Studios. In the same year, he made appearances and did small roles in a number of television shows such as "Bonanza", "Ironside", Adam 12", and "Marcus Webley." It was in the following year that he was cast as Keith Partridge in the show "The Partridge Family." His on screen mother was played by his real life stepmom, Shirley Jones, who was the show’s leading lady. The show was created by Bernard Slade and Paul Junger Witt. Although the show was a musical, and Cassidy had yet to discover his singing abilities, the producers thought that his unique androgynous looks would suffice for the show to become a hit. A little while after the show started to air, Cassidy tried to convince the producers that he was indeed a good singer and asked them to be put into the show’s lineup of leading singers. He worked with Wes Farrell, the show’s music producer and recorded the song "I Think I Love You." The tune in his voice was such a hit that he was promoted to a lead soon after. This is what also encouraged him to start a solo singing career later on.
Alongside the show, he began to work on his singing material in the studio. By the next year, he released his debut single entitled "Cherish" and a record of the same name. The song charted really well all over the world, reaching the top 10 in the US, the top 5 in the UK and number 1 in both New Zealand and Australia. Soon after, he began to embark on his own tours as he produced a string of hit singles. When he started out as a singer, his aim was to become a rock star and wanted to fashion his career after Alice Cooper or Mick Jagger. Rather, he found himself being categorized as a teen idol, a label he thoroughly loathed. He strived for a rock career, although his audience liked it better when he sang bubblegum pop tunes. It was much later in his career that he came to terms with his image and began to get more comfortable with the kind of music that his listeners liked.
This did not mean that his sound did not evolve as he grew older; he did slowly incorporate rockier melodies into his songs. Cassidy has remained a popular culture icon even today. His image, singing style, and even acting choices have paved the way for many others like him today. David Cassidy tickets are now bought not only by his the older generation of music lovers but by the younger crowds as well.
