David Blaine was born to a schoolteacher mother and a Vietnam veteran. He was interested in magic from the start when he saw a magician perform in the New York subway. Raised by his mother, he lived in New Jersey suburbs, Little Falls, and went to Passaic Valley Regional High School. At the age of seventeen, he moved to Manhattan and began performing street magic. His first special was broadcast on TV titled David Blaine: Street Magic. Aired on NBC, it got great reviews from New York Daily News and soon caused a sensation all over New York City.

David Blaine ’s debut as a magician was spectacular, as were his tricks, illusions and feats of endurance. He was praised by Time magazine as being ‘ultracool’, changing the way magic was shown on TV. The New York Times described him as ‘unique’ and ‘fresh’, focusing on the reactions of spectators.  He began touring all over the US, as part of shows such as Magic Man where he would entertain people on the streets of Atlantic City, San Francisco, Dallas, Compton and even the Mohave Desert.

In just a few years, he was being dubbed ‘the hottest name in magic right now’ by the likes of USA Today. His feats of endurance, such as the famous Buried Alive was covered by CNN and BBC, in which he was buried in a tomb filled with three tons of water for seven long days. He survived by eating nothing and drinking only two to three spoonfulls of water, causing many to comment that even Harry Houdini could not have achieved the feat, as stated by Harry Houdini’s own niece, Marie Blood.  In doing this, he did what Harry Houdini had planned to do but could not, thus surpassing his hero.

Hardly a year after the Buried Alive performance, he took on another feat of endurance, Frozen in Time. In this, he was fully wrapped in a block of ice dressed in light clothes with air brought in via a tube. He stayed in this tomb of ice for sixty three long hours and was seen live by millions on TV. One of his most difficult stunts to date, it was a groundbreaking achievement that tested the endurance of the human body, with the stunt praised by The New York Times and CNN.

In 2002, he performed a stunt dubbed Vertigo in which he stood on a pillar one hundred feet high in Bryant Park, New York City and stayed there for thirty five long hours. This feat was so amazing that it bordered on magical and ended with a jump onto a pile of cardboard boxes. Later that year, his book Mysterious Stranger: A Book of Magic was published, as was a one hundred thousand dollar treasure hunt challenge launched. In 2003, he kicked off a forty four day long endurance stunt which saw him sealed in a Plexiglas case and suspended thirty feet in the air, surviving with just several gallons of water a day.

In 2006, he was back with yet another phenomenal stunt, Drowning Alive, this time being submerged in an eight feet long water sphere for seven days and nights at the Lincoln Center in New York City. Covered by The New York Times, the event attracted thousands, leading to a new Guinness Book of World Record.  His next stunt, Revolution, saw him escape from a gyroscope which had been rotating for sixteen long hours near Times Square. With several Guinness World Records to his name, he is an act who should not be missed for anything. So get your David Blaine tickets and witness the Houdini of our times.
