Daniel Caesar first came into the limelight in 2014 with his EP “Praise Break”. While R&B had been stagnant for much of the previous decade, this young millennial brought newness to the genre which was largely missing. His album made it to the “20 Best R&B Albums of 2014” along with albums by superstars such as Stevie Wonder and Jamie Foxx.
Since then Caesar has gained nearly 32 million streams on Apple Music and Spotify in all. Out of these, his single “Get You” received 10 million streams alone. He collaborated on this track with the Colombian singer and music producer Kali Uchis. The artist is influenced by religion, having been introduced to music through gospel choirs, and is also interested in exploring the idea of unrequited love.
His 2017 album, “Freudian” appears to be the perfect unification of both of these inspirations. The Toronto hailing R&B singer has put everything he’s got in his debut album, and it shows. On the album, he attempts to turn towards gospel to heal form the pains of unfulfilled love. It is an interesting thing to see from a twenty-two-year-old’s perspective, however Stevie Wonder has given it his seal of approval, so there is little left to contest its greatness.
Caesar also pays homage to his inspirations on this album. His track “Hold Me Down” includes a refashioned melody of the great Kirk Franklin’s “Hold Me Now” as a tribute to the singer. He does this again on “We Find Love” which includes the soprano from Kyle David Matthews’ song “We Fall Down”. The album is filled with such nuggets-worth of Easter eggs are, and it shows beyond anything else that Caesar is respectful and devoted to the tradition set by great artists before him.
The singer reiterates the relationship between R&B and Gospel music on this album. He exhibits love to be nothing short of a holy experience and therefore makes a spiritual connection between the two. His words are refreshingly lacking in superficiality as they these abstract concepts in simple words. It is his soul-ripping honesty that makes his work so poignant. There are very few artists like him in today’s day and age. His upbeat songs may want to make you dance at a club, but they’ll definitely end with you solemnly contemplating the meaning of life and your part in it.
What’s Going On Now
“We Find Love” and “Blessed” are the artist’s complementary new singles to hit the market. The two love songs were released in late 2017 only to instantly rise up to # 1 on the Apple Music charts. This seems to be the time when anything Caesar touches becomes gold. The two singles premiered on Carl Cheryl’s radio show “#TheCosign” and she has this to say about the artist; “"He’s in a zone. He’s locked in, making something truly special. I’ve been listening to 'We Find Love,' 'Blessed' and other songs from his next project for months. It’s the best music I’ve ever championed."
All eyes are on Daniel Caesar to see what he will come up with next. Meanwhile, R&B enthusiasts are making their way to his live shows and purchasing Daniel Caesar tickets. You should do that too.
