DAngelo is a sensational American R&B artist from Richmond, Virginia who has been active in the world of American music since 1991. Known for often combining soul and funk elements in his music, he is a singer, a songwriter and a musician who plays the keyboard, Hammond organ, bass, drums, piano and guitar. His music, shaped into amazing albums, has been released by such record labels as RCA Records, EMI Records, J Records and Virgin Records. He has also collaborated and performed with the likes of Soulquarians, Raphael Saadiq, Questlove,The RH Factor, J-Dilla, Common, De La Soul and Q-Tip. DAngelo is also a record producer, having produced a number of his own albums and for other artists. He has been influenced by the music of Prince and Marvin Gaye, amongst others and is one of the main artists behind the rise of neo soul music. A multi-instrumentalist, he is versatile in a number of instruments, which have helped shape his music. He was born to a preacher in Richmond, Virginia where he discovered an aptitude for music at a very young age. By the age of three, he had begun playing the piano. Professionally, his career in music kicked off when he was signed onto EMI Records after he caught their attention with a sensational demo tape. One of the first songs he wrote was for the band Black Men United which was then part of the soundtrack of Jason’s Lyric.
His first album for EMI Records came out in 1996 and was labeled as Brown Sugar. One of its hit singles, Lady, ranked in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 and the album itself was certified platinum with over one million copies sold in the US and over two million copies sold worldwide. As one of the best neo soul albums of its time, it propelled to fame the entire movement, which then consisted of the likes of Lauryn Hill, Maxwell and Erykah Badu. Added to being commercially successful, it also received a lot of critical acclaim and was ranked as one of the Best Albums of the Year.
He then went on to record music for a number of movie soundtracks, including those for Belly, Scream 2, Down in the Delta and Get on the Bus, as well as covered a number of famous songs by Prince and Eddie Kendricks. He also sang a duet with Lauryn Hill and released his second album in 2000 through Virgin Records. The album ranked first on the charts and went to win two Grammy Awards in the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Album categories. Titled Voodoo, the album’s first single ranked high on the charts with the second single’s music video gaining the album much more fame. Its music video would go on to win four MTV Video Music Award nominations and is ranked as one of the 100 Greatest Videos by VH1.
Following the release of this album, he kicked off the Voodoo Tour backed by a band known as the Soultronics and complete with dancers and instrumentalists. The tour would go on to become one of the most famous and most popular of the year. Concerts part of took place as far off as Europe and Brazil, at festivals such as Brazil’s Free Jazz Festival and the North Sea Jazz Festival in Europe. His second album was ranked as one of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine with Q magazine ranking him as one of the 50 Bands to See Before You Die. Pitchfork Media also ranked the album as one of the Best Album of the 2000s.
After the tour, he went on to appear as a guest artist on any albums, as well as contributing to a Fela Kuti tribute album. He was also featured on a song by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg and in 2008, a Greatest Hits compilation was released through Virgin Records. In 2012, he kicked off a tour that visited many European cities, including London, Stockholm, Paris, Oslo, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Zurich. He also performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and Rotterdam’s North Sea Jazz Festival.
