Barry Humphries was born in 1934 in Melbourne, Australia. Growing up, he lacked nothing as his parents were quite well off and could afford to get him anything he wanted. However, his father was also a very busy man and did not have much time to spend with his son, which led Barry to play dress up in his spare time. He would create new characters using makeup and costumes while also coming up with elaborate back stories for them using his amazing imagination. By the time he got to his formative years, he had become an avid reader and had started to exude a rebellious nature, which often put him at odds with his parents.
When he started college, Humphries became involved with an art movement called Dada. The movement focused on challenging societal norms, being “anti-art” and anti establishment. It was meant to shock and surprise people. Barry became one of the biggest proponents of this faction and that made him famous all over the city for the pranks he would pull in order to get a reaction out of the general public. The movement was pivotal for his future career as it brought out his love of doing things differently by making people uncomfortable.
During his university days, Humphries started writing satirical plays and performed in several productions. So after he graduated, he first joined the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) where he created and debuted a character called Edna Everage. Edna would go on to become the most popular character he would create and one of the most recognizable stars of the entertainment industry in over fifty years.
In the nineties, Humphries released an autobiography for Edna called “My Gorgeous Life.” In it he tells her complete life story in great detail. She was born Edna May Beazley in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales and has four children named Lois, Bruce, Kenny, and Valmai. To this day, Barry has never referred to himself as Edna or never called her a ‘he.’ He has always treated her as a separate person and has taken great pride in her achievements on the stage.
Over the years Edna has also had other stage friends. For many years, Madge Allsop, who was played by the late Emily Perry, was a constant companion and after her death, she was replaced Edna’s ‘daughter’ Valmai. These characters usually become an outlet for most of her jokes although she also famous for her jokes on society, politics and pop culture.
To date, Edna has done several movies and television shows in various capacities. She hosted a long running television talk show as well where famous stars from the world of music and film would come to be interviewed.
At the end of the day, however it was her one-man revues that really made her an international celebrity. These shows would incorporate original stories, satire, audience participation, singing and dancing to make it an extravaganza to remember. The world famous Edna is now on tour and will soon be coming to an arena near you. Grab your Dame Edna tickets and catch this legendary performer, live on stage as she delivers an unforgettable performance.
