The Dallas Symphony Orchestra originally started as a 40-person ensemble led by the esteemed Hans Kreissig. This small orchestra began on May 22, 1900 and continued for five seasons and established itself. It was very fortunate for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra that Antal Dorati’s successor, Walter Hendl, was similarly vigorous as Dorati and the orchestra grew by leaps and bounds during his excellent leadership from 1949 to 1958. Hendl was followed by such eminent music directors as Sir George Solti, Paul Kletzki, Donald Johanos, Max Rudolf, etc. Another dynamic leader, Eduardo Mata, started leading the orchestra in 1977; during his tenure, the magnificent orchestra performed twice at Carnegie Hall, which is a glowing achievement for any orchestra. The orchestra also became internationally known and performed in many European cities, Singapore and Mexico City. The Dallas Symphony Orchestra was steadily becoming a world-class orchestra.
A truly brilliant young American, Andrew Litton, was assigned the leadership of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in 1992. He worked diligently on the international repute of the orchestra and started the first television venture in the form of the Amazing Music Family concert series.
