The trio was originally formed in the 1960s when three of the most talented band members from three different bands came together for several performances. David Crosby, who was a player in the Byrds, did not exactly get along with the rest of his band. Finally in 1967, he could not have any more of it and they parted their ways. Stephan Stills, who was playing for the Buffalo Springfield, was also looking for a new band since Buffalo Springfield had disintegrated by 1968. Graham Nash, who was an acquaintance of both Crosby and Stephen Stills, met up with the two when his band, The Hollies, was touring California in the summer of the same year. That is when they discovered how all three of them had such a perfect vocal chemistry, where each of their peculiar talents, complements those of the others. With this realization, the three started working together, giving the music industry one of the greatest trios in folk rock.
The band has recorded a total of eight studio albums over the course of their forty year musical career collaboration. Their self titled debut album was certified four times platinum which was followed by their Deja Vu which blew everyone away with its massive success with their fan base which already existed due to their work with their bands. Deja Vu received super positive reviews and that is when they all knew that it was the right decision to work together as this album was certified seven times platinum. In 2008, they released a film by the name of CSNY/Deja Vu which was shown in the Sundance Film Festival in 2008. The movie was directed by Neil Young under his pseudonym Bernard Shakey. The whole movie revolves around the career of Crosby Stills Nash & Young, especially their highly successful Freedom of Speech tour of 2006.
