Synonymous to most Canadian rock and pop artists, the Cowboy Junkies came and became a sensation in mainstream. The Junkies aspire to bring rock to the world in their own color and identity. Drawing inspiration from roots of progressive rock along with other genres like Americana, alternative rock, Country rock, folk, blues and indie rock; Cowboy Junkies created and revived alt-country ala Canadian style. The band members came together in order to realize their dream of creating the most authentic sound of country rock from Canada.
Cowboy Junkies were conceived by Timmins and Alanas who were a part of Hunger Project and Germinal. In the mid eighties they started off Cowboy Junkies a pure Canadian country blues rock act. Various underground gig settings and downtown Toronto clubs housed their performances that attracted not only general audiences but also music producers. Whites Off Earth Now!! The bluest version of the original song became their first generally acclaimed effort. Their sound and music reached music makers and The Trinity Session was born. This Canadian platinum certified bestseller proved groundbreaking in the career of the Cowboy Junkies.
In 1988 when The Trinity Session was made it was a mere effort of energy teamed with passionate rocking blues. A night at a church session with the bare recording necessities the band created the most beautiful singles featured on the album; Misguided Angel and Sweet Jane. They had hardly anticipated the response generated by the released album. It was a super hit a hard rock talk that got audiences and critics drooling over the Cowboy Junkies. The band was able to manifest remarkable spark in their presence that was missing in many of their contemporary counterparts. They played blues and punk in the most authentic Canadian mood, leading them to a stairway of success where they never backtracked. As an international hit the band hit extensive national and world wide concert touring.
The Sharon Temple Sessions in 1989 hit stands and the next two years, the band was being celebrated everywhere. Realizing the star status the Cowboy Junkies refined their studio and live presence with nostalgic beats teamed with crude and grungy guitar riffs. The Caution Horses (1990) the band’s second best selling platinum album allowed for more success cushion. Juno’s marked them Group of the Year for the years 1990 and 1991. Three more albums from the band namely Black Eyed Man, The Pale Sun Crescent Moon and Lay It Down offered a rather hazy, slow yet profoundly pounding blues, bagged Gold certifications in no time.
With changing times and trends the Cowboy Junkies saw the need to revamp their approach to music and uplift their smoky blues to smashing puffs. Miles from Our Home 1998 made way for a zingier Junkie stance that was depicted in none other, live album Waltz Across America. The album became a Cowboy Junkies a time favorite live album. Open and then One Soul Now marked the band’s entry into the new millennium. Becoming politically charged the Cowboy Junkies proved their stance with these and follow-up releases.
Early 21st Century Blues (2007) and At the End of Paths Taken (2005) said everything out aloud! Soon it was time to go back home and the Cowboy Junkies landed on And Trinity Revisited (2007) and Nomad Series (2010). The later boasted of a collection of four critically acclaimed thematic presentations of the band’s ideology of live, love, disposition and power.Cowboy Junkies are a live experience to die for.
