Born in Montreal, Quebec on May 31, 1962, Corey Hart was the youngest among five siblings. His parents separated when Hart was only ten years of age following which Hart began to live with his mother and older brother in Montreal. He shared a very close relationship with his mother and also dedicated his first record to her. He lacked closeness and contact with his father, a fact that disturbed him throughout his life. Many of his music compositions reflect this pain and vacuum he felt because of his distant relationship with him. One song that stands out in this regard is the 1998 number Reconcile.
Corey Hart’s first experience of performing live was at the age of eleven. This was when he sang the song Ben in Miami. During this time he also recorded songs with Canadian singer and songwriter Paul Anka in Las Vegas. In the year 1980, Hart represented his country at the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo. This marked his first live public performance of original music material. At the competition, Hart also had the opportunity to meet the Grammy wining musician Christopher Cross.
Back in Canada, Corey Hart reached out to music artist Billy Joel who was then touring the Montreal area. Joel’s backup band got in contact with Hart and the aspiring singer got the chance to record a number of demos with them. Hart continued to work with various Canadian musicians on demos before he signed a contract with Aquarius Records in the year 1982. He was only twenty years old at the time. Several tracks on his first record reflected the rejections and tribulations Hart faced while trying to crack a deal with a major record label. One of these songs is The World is Fire.
Corey Hart released his debut studio album titled First Offense in 1983. It featured the ballad It Ain’t Enough and the hit single Sunglasses at Night. The record went on to receive four nominations at the Juno Awards. Besides it won Hart a Grammy in the category of Best New Artist.
Produced by Phil Chapman and Jon Astley, First Offense received quadruple Platinum certification in Canada and went Platinum in the US. The super hit music video of Sunglasses at Night was directed by Rob Quartly. Featuring a futuristic, Orwellian society, it helped increase the popularity of the song, leading Hart to become a music sensation around the world.
Corey Hart’s second studio record Boy in the Box hit the store shelves in June of 1985. The record included the hit single Never Surrender which occupied the number one spot in Canada for an impressive nine weeks. It reached the third spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Hart an ASCAP Award for having one of the most played songs of the year.
Boy in the Box hit the 20th spot on the US Billboard 200 and achieved Platinum status in the US. The album racked up a number of nominations and honors. It received a Juno Award and an ADISQ Award nomination in the Best Album category. The song Never Surrender won the Best Selling Single Juno Award in 1985. Hart himself was nominated alongside veteran Canadian music artists for the Composer of the Year honor at the ADISQ and the Junos.
Over the 1980s and 1990s, Corey Hart treated the fans to numerous albums. These include Fields of Fire, Young Man Running, Attitude & Virtue, Bang and Corey Hart. His latest record to hit the shelves was Jade in 1998. It comprised three hit singles – La-Bas, Break the Chains and So Visible.
