Concha Buika is a Spanish singer from Palma de Mallorca in Spain who has been active in the world of music since 2000. Known primarily for her unique blend of music that mixes in flamenco, copla, jazz and even house, she has gained fame in the Spanish speaking world and beyond. Concha Buika was born to a family originally from Equatorial Guinea and grew up amongst the Romani people of Spain, known also as the Gitanos. It is here that she learned the unique traditional cante flamenco style of music which she would then go on to mix with soul, jazz and coplas to create her own sound. During the nineties, she was part of a number of albums, working on La Fura dels Baus’s Ombra and even on the soundtrack for the famous Spanish movie, km.O. At this time, she began composing her own songs such as Loving You, Up to the Sky and Ritmo para voce.
In 2000, Concha Buika began performing at live venues in the US such as The Luxor, Gold Coast and Harrah’s in Las Vegas, impersonating Tina Turner and singing songs. She also performed with Rachelle Ferrell as her guest singer at the Blue Note Festival. She has worked with house music producers DJ Chus and David Penn, providing vocals to their songs and is today regarded as one of the liveliest artists in Spanish music. She released the album Mi Nina Loca in 2006 after her first album, Buika, released in 2005. In this album, Nino Josele played the guitar and it featured popular copla songs such as Te Camelo, Mi Nina Lola and Ojos Verdes. It also contained flamenco and jazz fusion songs; Jodida per contenta and Love.
In 2008, Concha Buika released the album Nina de Fuego which contained coplas, rumbas and bulerias songs. These were written by herself and Javier Limon, her artistic producer. It also contained remakes of classic Spanish coplas, such as the album’s title song and even a song in the style of traditional Mexican ballads. This album went on to received a Latin Grammy Award nomination for the Album of the Year. In 2009, she collaborated with Nelly Furtado on the singer’s smash hit, Fuerte, which was part of Nelly Furtado’s Spanish album titled as Mi Plan. She also released an album titled as El Ultimo Trago featuring Chucho Valdes and followed it up with En mi Piel in 2011.
In 2011, Concha Buika performed a number of songs for the famous movie, The Skin I Live In, titled as Por El Amor de Amar and Se Me Hizo Facil.
