Cocorosie is a French hip hop group that has been active since 2003 and hails from Paris. Regarded as one of the best groups today in France, it has spread its roots to the US and has become an American sensation. Its music is best described as freak folk with a general tone of hip hop and experimental music. It has been signed onto a number of record labels including Sub Pop Records, Voodoo Eros Records and Touch and Go Records. It has also been associated with a number of other acts including Antony Hegarty, Metallic Falcons and Devendra Banhart. Cocorosie is home to a number of artists; the founding sisters Sierra ‘Rosie’ Casady and Bianca ‘Coco’ Casady as well as pianist Gael Rakotondrabe and Tez. Though the two sisters Rosie and Coco formed the band in Paris, France, they grew up in the US. They grew up in several American towns and cities including Hawaii, New Mexico, Arizona and even California. Their mother, a singer and an artist, encouraged them to find their way and discover their own tastes in music and life. At the age of eighteen, Sierra moved to New York City and then to Paris where she began studying at the Conservartoire de Paris and started a career as an opera singer. At this time, the two sisters were living apart with Bianca studying sociology and linguistics in New York City and pursuing her hobbies of writing and visual arts.
 
In 2003, Cocorosie’s two founding sisters met in Paris and decided to begin creating music. They then began to practice in their flat’s bathroom, spending nearly two months polishing their music. This led to their first album, La Maison de Mon Reve. Initially meant as a record to be distributed amongst friends, it caught the attention of the record label Touch and Go Records who signed on the artists. The two sisters, then a duo, began work on their next album which was released in 2005 and titled as Noah’s Ark. This album contained songs featuring artists such as Antony and the Johnsons member Antony Hegarty, rapper Spleen and Devendra Banhart.
 
In 2006, one of the members of Cocorosie, Sierra, started the project Metallic Falcons with Matteah Baim which was then signed onto a record label founded by Bianca known as Voodoo Eros Records. She also founded the Voodoo Eros Museum Of Nice Items which is an art gallery located in New York City where Bianca displays some of her art such as the Red Bone Slim VS. Itself: an Exhibition of Drawings. In 2007, Cocorosie released its third studio album titled as The Adventures of Ghosthores and Stillborn. This album was produced by Valgeir Sigurosson who is best known as having worked with artist Bjorn for a long time.
 
In 2008, Cocorosie released a new song titled as God Has a Voice, She Speaks Through Me. This was a digital release and it was met with much acclaim from fans and critics alike. They then went on to record and write newer material which was released in the form of the EP Coconuts, Plenty of Junk Food. This album was also highly successful and involved the group further experimenting with their unique style of music. At the same time, they were ranked sixteenth on the Most Influential Artist of the Decade list. In 2011, Cocorosie released their fourth studio album Grey Oceans through Sub Pop Records.
