Citizens! initially found success in UK; however, over the period of time they’ve become famous all across Europe and making their way into the United States music scene as well. Before forming their own band, Diamond, Burke and Evans were a part of Official Secrets Act band. When it broke up in 2009, they decided to form their own band. After a short hiatus the trio returned with Richmond and Rhoades and started to record demos. Their initial style was a mixture of catchy Berlin era sound with glam which reminded he fans of famous past acts like Hot Chip, Sparks, Bowie and Suede.
Citizens! song Lets Go All The Way
was featured on Vol. 11 of Kitsune Maison record. Eventually as they continued to record demos, they came in connection with Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand. He helped the band in recording of their very first studio album in Scotland. By the summer of 2011, Citizens! were already performing in live shows and were touring excessively, gaining fan base along the way. They managed to release their first debut single by the name of True Romance
in December. It was followed by two more singles, Carolina
before finally their debut studio album titled “Here We Are” was released in May of 2012. Initially the album was released in UK and Europe. By October it was taken to the United States as well.
Citizen! made a mark in both UK and across Europe. Either it’s because they are signed to French based record or because of their upbeat happy tones, they have gained a great popularity among the masses all across Europe. The album has a touch of music of bands such as American Collective and Phoenix. The album includes tracks that are referred to as “weird” and “sexy.” While some might say that the band has tried to be sexy and weird for the sake of being weird and sexy, others would give a totally different remark.
Unique in its own way, the album is creepy yet full of danceable songs. The critics and fans find it highly enchanting the way Citizen! manage to mix stark, artsy and creepy with cool and chirpy tunes. The reviews of the record included comments such as “hypnotizing” “cold blooded-lovers” and “seducing.” While on the subject of receiving mixed criticism, some critics have also been calling their debut release a “decent affair” while others are calling it a “shocker pop” release.
Here We Are by Citizens! lead single True Romance prepares the mind of the listeners as to what they are supposed to expect from the band. The song includes the typical plinky plonky tones while at the same time also features Burke’s deep, strong and influential voice. On a whole the album is a very good debut release.
