Fairy tales and legends have their charm that does not tarnish even through ages. Most of the people are unaware of their origin, but what is evident to everyone is the fact that the legend is alive in hearts and minds of people even after ages and they still find them interesting and charming. These stories are frequently made the subject of many films and musicals and one of such efforts is Cinderella Theatrical Production.

Cinderella Theatrical Production is a musical that has its basis on the famous fairy tale Cinderella, and has its music composed by Richard Rodgers while Oscar Hammerstein II has written the lyrics as well as the book for the musical. The original story Cinderella was a brainchild of Charles Perrault, the famous French writer who also has the credit of writing Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard and Puss in Boots. Cinderella narrates the story of a young and beautiful girl whose step mother and step sisters force her to live a servant’s life. As the story unfolds, she meets a fairy god mother with the help of whom she manages to find her true love, Prince.

The performance on stage is in three acts, where the first act mainly presents how Cinderella, the young beauty has to suffer in hands of her stepmother and step sisters. The girl is deprived of even the smallest pleasures of life, but a ray of hope comes as a Herald proclaims about a Ball to be given by the Prince. However, her step mother and step sisters refuse to take her along for the Ball. Nevertheless, her dream to be at the Ball with the Prince comes to life as a fairy godmother appears and brings her a dress and a cart but tells her to be back before midnight.

At the Ball she meets the Prince and the two fell in love with each other, but she hardly manages to get back by midnight. In the last act, the Prince finds her finally after a tedious search operation throughout the locality and they live happily ever after.

Cinderella was performed on stage for the first time in 1958 at the London Coliseum. It received a great response from public that encouraged the team to perform at other venues also, including the United States. For the first time, the musical was performed in the US in 1961. Many of the great names from stage performed in Cinderella Theatrical Production at that time, including Sally Ann Howes, Jean Stapleton and Nancy Marchand. Other artists that have performed in Cinderella Theatrical Production at different times include Eartha Kitt, Dick Van Patten, Deborah Gibson, Jamie – Lynn Sigler, Everett Quinton and Paolo Montalban.

There have been times when Cinderella Theatrical Production has also been performed with an all – female cast, like in 2008 in Japan when Morning Musume, a J – Pop group performed in it along with some members of Takarazuka Revue. In that production, Risa Niigaki played the Prince while the role of Cinderella was performed by Ai Takahashi.

Different teams have performed the musical at different times in their own style, but one factor has always remained common among them all – the love and respect for the fairytale and the passion to bring to life this masterpiece of literature. The artists who have performed in Cinderella Theatrical Production at various venues throughout the world have also received critical acclamation in form of awards and nominations. Some notable nominations and awards given to artists associated with this musical include the 1957 Emmy Awards nominations for Julie Andrews for Best Single Performance by an Actress in Lead or Support role and Richard Rodgers for Best Musical Contribution for Television. The musical was a winner of Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety or Music Program’ in 1997.
