Cincinnati Pops Orchestra traces its history back to 1870s when it was part of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra is the fifth oldest orchestra in the United States and the oldest one in Ohio. Since its formation, it has been playing a significant role in cultural life of Cincinnati and over the years has built its reputation as a champion of new music. Cincinnati is home to great American composers such as Mahler, Debussy, Ravel and many others. Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra founded Cincinnati Pops Orchestra in 1977. Erich Kunzel was its founder and continued to lead the orchestra till his death in 2009.

Under the direction of Kunzel, the Orchestra rose to fame and recognition very soon. Besides performances at sold-out theatres and venues in Cincinnati, the Orchestra soon reached out to the people all around the United States with frequent memorable performances at Carnegie Hall and Grand Ol’ Opry. Over the years, the orchestra’s fame spread to other parts of the world leading to various international tours including Japan and Taiwan tour in 1990 and 1997 and Beijing tour for summer Olympics 2008, hence being the only American orchestra to play in Olympics. The Orchestra made 85 recordings with Telarc label under Kunzel’s lead. Some of the most popular and well received recordings include Tchaikovsky 1978, Overture 1812 and From the Top at the Pops. The ones appeared in the top Ten of Billboard Charts are Star Tracks in 1984, Ein Straussfest in 1985, Round-Up in 1986, Chiller in 1989 and Masters and Commanders in 2005. The Orchestra has also appeared on various Television specials.

Cincinnati Pops Orchestra is regarded as one of the world’s most active classic pop ensembles. The orchestra’s outdoor summer home is Riverbend Music Center where 10 subscription concerts are performed while more than 20 are performed during Music Hall Season. Its primary purpose remains raising awareness of organization through broader audience. The orchestra followers have been increasing tremendously with more than 30 million people viewing their national telecasts. Till now, orchestra has released around 100 recordings, 56 of which have been appeared on Billboard Top Charts and has sold more than 10 million copies producing an unmatchable record by any other orchestra. Four of these recording have received Grammy nomination while The Pops’ Copland: Music of America won Grammy Award in 1998.

In September 2011, John Morris Russell became Orchestra’s new director further strengthening its standing as one of the country’s best pops orchestras.  Under the direction of renowned Conductor, the 2012-13 season of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra would be as inspiring as ever. The season includes nine programs including a holiday program featuring six time Grammy winner Amy Grant, Ballroom with a Twist with talent from popular reality TV shows like American Idol, Dancing with the Stars and So You Think You can Dance? and a spectacular closing concert with Mandy Patinkin. The Pop Orchestra will also celebrate King of Pop, music of Michael Jackson and perform the music that made James Bond a mysterious man for fifty years.
